Geek Tip: Use Cover Flow to Search iCal Appointments

Sugar HQ is now using iCal more than ever, so it's totally out of selfishness that I bring you today's tip. Instead of starting up iCal to view your appointments, you can use Cover Flow! Cover Flow is one of my favorite ways to browse music and photos and search for files. Mostly 'cause I just like the sleek scrolly-ness of it.

A great tip I found on Tekzilla suggests typing "kind:ical" (without quotation marks) into Spotlight, then click "show all." You'll then get a popup Finder window that will list all your iCal events. From there, it's as easy as clicking "Cover Flow" (or the Cover Flow icon) at the top of the nav bar, and you're all set. It's super fast, and I won't have to wait for my events to load every time I open iCal. Sweet.

Geek Tip: Maximize Your Mac With Spotlight

Maybe you know everything that Spotlight does already, and maybe you've never really thought about the little magnifying glass icon in the top right hand corner of your Mac's screen.

If you're in the latter category, then I have some tips that will make your life easier. You may use it most often in the search bar of your browser window or to hunt down stuff in iTunes, but these tips explore the offline applications of this handy little tool (for those of you who have updated to Leopard).

Click on the Spotlight icon for:

A Dictionary: Don't waste your time looking for a website to do it for you - just open spotlight, type in "lugubrious," and hit enter. Spotlight activates the Dictionary application and provides you with the definition of the word and its etymology.
A Calculator: Just type the math problem into Spotlight and the calculation is performed and displayed in the window.

To see what else it can do,

To open up applications and files instantly - good even if you use Quicksilver.
Lastly, the shortcut key to get to the Spotlight for Finder is command-space bar or command-option-space bar.

Rihanna brought an extra dose of sexiness to music's biggest night in an Armani gown at the Grammys. She helped design the racy black dress, which had an open back and slit, with Giorgio Armani. Rihanna's nominated at this evening's show and will also be performing. She'll first take the stage solo and will later be joined by Coldplay. Rihanna will be back in the spotlight later this month for the Brit Awards, which will take place on Feb. 21, the day after her 24th birthday.

She walked the runway at the Alexander Wang show and met up with pals Karolina Kurkova, Shalom Harlow, and Carmen Kass backstage. Gisele shared that designer Alexander Wang "asked me and I'm very happy I was able to be here." She was in the spotlight during the Fashion Week festivities after making headlines last week for her comments following the Super Bowl. Gisele dropped an f-bomb after the big game, expressing her frustration at the Patriots' loss against the Giants.

Angelina Jolie Kicks Off a Busy Red-Carpet Day in Berlin

Angelina Jolie posed for cameras at the Grand Hyatt in Berlin this morning. She wore a belted black dress and nude heels for the photocall and press day, which comes ahead of her In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere tonight. Angelina's been talking about her directorial debut for the last few days and opened up about her life in the spotlight in a recent interview, saying that red carpets are just "that funny thing you do." She also shared her excitement and nervousness about taking Blood and Honey to Sarajevo since the film is based on the Bosnian war.
Angelina's overseas trip hasn't been just about business, though, since she took Maddox, Pax, and Shiloh to check out Legoland this week when she wasn't working.

Cushnie et Ochs was all about the femme-fatale factor for Fall 2012 as designers Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs showed a vast array of body-con dresses punctuated with modern details. Inspired by Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In, the duo put the spotlight on fitted sheaths featuring sexy cutouts. Zippers also played a large role in the story, lined against the length of the body and, while we've yet to predict the Hollywood girl who will dare to wear it, cupped underneath the bust line. If the body-conscious silhouettes seemed overtly sexy, Cushnie and Ochs tempered the sexy theme with loose, yet still seductive, silk draped cutout dresses made in gorgeous cobalt and emerald-green jewel tones.
