Strike Up a Linear Theme

While using repeated motifs or patterns, such as stars, ikat, or suzani, throughout a room can certainly be cute, sometimes a more subtle approach is easier on the eyes. I love this living area in the portfolio of photographer Per Magnus Persson, but it took me a few minutes to figure out why. Then I realized that there's a linear theme that pulls it all together. Playing off of the repeated pattern of the staircase in the room, a set of boldly striped chaises, a powder-coated steel chair with a linear frame, and a framed piece of artwork with text arranged in a column all continue the linear theme. Most of the pieces in the room are also modern in style, which helps to create a cohesive look as well.

Luckily, this linear look is really easy to re-create, and it will work with any budget! Of course, striped textiles are a foolproof beginning. You can also try décor with pleats, furniture with a linear openings, or a mirror with a textured frame. The next time you're shopping at a furnishing store, keep your eyes peeled for repeated shapes and see what theme you can come up with!

Roundup: Black and White and Rad All Over

Talk about a graphic art installation. Artist Aeneas Wilder, seen below, takes a closer look at his latest work, Untitled #155, which he spent 200 hours making from uniform lengths of wood with no fixative. If you're in England, head to Longside Gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park to see the piece in person.

Inspired by the black and white stripes of Wilder's work, I took a look at some ways you can add graphic stripes to your casa. Bold black and white stripes are a good way to add pattern and movement to a space. They pair well with everything from pastels to bold primary colors.

One of my perennial favorites in the stripes department is Ikea's bold and beautiful Rand Rug ($200, bottom row, center). The handwoven flatweave wool rug is reversible and features an alternating stripe pattern in its middle section that breaks up the look.

You can try adding a smaller touch of stripes to your tabletop with Diane von Furstenberg's Striped Napkin Ring Set ($43, top row, left). Made of resin, I'd love to see them paired with turquoise napkins on a white table overlooking the ocean. A perfect Summer dinner party look, don't you think?
