Todd Oldham to Bring Kid Made Modern to Target With New Line of Art Supplies

Art supplies and crafts collection, designed by a real-life designer, at Target prices? Sign me up! When Todd Oldham first published Kid Made Modern ($16) almost three years ago, he created a minirevolution in the world of arts and crafts. Inspired by the most influential midcentury artists - including Alexander Calder, Charles and Ray Eames, and Marimekko - he sought to teach lil ones about their creativity through 52 projects kids could do at home, everything from creating flowers out of wire (Calder) to making polka-dotted book covers using bubble wrap (Marimekko). The projects all used a combination of household items and store-bought crafting products.

This Spring the designer is expanding his drive to inspire creativity in kids through a new partnership with Target. On May 20, Target stores nationwide will introduce more than 50 Kid Made Modern art supplies and kits, all designed and tested by Oldham himself. I got a sneak peek at the line last week and can already tell you that it will be on your must-buy list! The beautifully made products - including crayons in various shapes and sizes (the pyramid one was my favorite!), board book-making kits, gorgeous wooden blocks primed for painting, and learn-to-sew kits that feature Charley Harper's gorgeous images - are all artfully packaged in recyclable boxes (many of which double as display cases) and will all be priced under $20 (talk about great birthday presents!).

Are You Excited About The Shops at Target?

On May 6, Target will introduce its customers to a new design program, The Shops at Target. Through the program, Target will partner with specialty store owners to create in-store boutiques featuring limited-edition, affordable collections. The first incarnation of The Shops at Target will feature five exclusive collections that span five categories. Representing the home category is Privet House, the Connecticut-based antique and home goods shop, owned and operated by Richard Lambertson and Suzanne Cassano. It will be interesting to see how the two curate their shop for Target, creating a collection on a mass-market scale.

Other shops launching on May 6 include The Cos Bar, Polka Dog Bakery, The Candy Store, and The Webster. Watch the video below for more information on The Shops at Target.

While we all wait on pins and needles for the Jason Wu for Target collection launch, the brand has just given us some more Spring fashion inspiration to consider. For Spring '12, Target culled all of its stylish house brands - Mossimo, Converse One Star, and Xhilaration, to name a few - in one snazzy lookbook. We just got our hands on the Jason Wu for Target lookbook, showing the line in its 53-piece entirety. The "gamine chic" collection, inspired by French new-wave films, drops online and in stores on Feb. 5 featuring a range of pieces reflecting girlie nuances with a fresh twist via crisp peplum tops, sweet floral-print dresses, Peter Pan collars, and pleated skirts. Striped colorblocking, sheer floaty blouses, and chic structured totes and handbags were also a focal point in the line. "I wanted the collection to have a sophisticated voice with an American sportswear spin,” said Wu. The best part? Everything is priced under $60. This is a collection we can't wait to shop. Anchors away lil ones! It's safe to say that we flipped for Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Mini line for Target this year. The collection of affordable pieces for infants, toddlers, and tweens - many relaying positive thoughts about lil girls - was a breath of fresh air in the kids' clothing world, and from the looks of things, you all agree!

Michelle Obama Reveals Her Fashion Motto

In a round-table discussion on family and health at the White House yesterday, Michelle Obama revealed to Fab how she decides what to wear and if she ever feels fashion anxiety.

Wearing a pretty pink dress from Target, the first lady said, "My motto is I have to feel good in it; I have to wear what I love. I try to be thoughtful about spreading the wealth: young designers. Mixing things up is important to me. But my day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, what’s the temperature? Am I going to be sitting on the grass? Will I be playing with kids - because I usually want to." As for her shopping habits, Obama admitted, "I don’t buy it if I don’t love it. Everything in my closet is something that I love so that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever it is."

What does one of the most stylish first ladies of our time say when it comes to fashion anxiety? "I don’t want to waste anxiety on something as limited as clothes. I’d rather be anxious over the issue, or worry about the remarks, or think about the veteran that I’m talking to and making sure I’m listening and paying attention; the clothes are just the secondary part or the third part of what is happening over the course of the day." Obama's secret to erasing that anxiety is simple: "If I’m comfortable in what I have on, that’s second nature, and then all my attention can go to the people in the room that I’m with at that time, and I don’t have to worry about whether something is riding up or whether my feet hurt."
