Ready-to-Wear Designers Delve Into Jewelry

It's raining baubles: Thakoon, Alice + Olivia, and Milly have announced expansions into jewelry.

Thakoon Panichgul has been swooped up by Japanese fine jewelry brand, Tasaki, to serve as its creative director. “My goal is to approach jewelry design in the same manner that I approach clothing: always move forward but respect the past,” said Panichgul.

Alice + Olivia received some help from jewelry extraordinaire, Karen Erickson, to design a limited-edition jewelry collection set to debut in Spring. The line, ranging from $278 to $393, is funky and modern - check out this rad leather floral bangle.

Milly designer, Michelle Smith, took inspiration from her Spring line to create Lucite necklaces, gold-plated bracelets, and colorful enamel cuffs. “From the time I was a girl, I was always into vintage jewelry. It is a passion of mine, so I thought it would be a great addition to the Milly collection,” said Smith. Her collection retails from $75 to $325, and will also launch in Spring. Bring on the bling!

Not bad for a newbie in the celeb modeling biz.Shot by Jessica Craig-Martin, the famous offspring laugh and play on the concrete steps at NYC's Morimoto restaurant while looking beautifully rough and tough. I quite fancy the abundance of leather jackets and have-to-have bags, but not so much the futuristic tennis shoes. What do you think - want to join in this fun?

2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Thakoon

There's nothing I like more than a smart, sexy, and sassy collection. Thakoon Panichgul’s collection was all that - and more. For Fall, the designer showed us his wearable yet unique take on feminine dressing with an assortment of pretty silk prints, nude organza, and furry textiles. For cuts, he diversified his offerings to include an array of tailored separates and equally engaging frocks.

I'm smitten over his genius placement of embellishments; check out the awesome sheer slices on this cobalt blue dress. Also, take note of Thakoon's cool prints and occasional pops of bright color. From start to finish, he created a line flowing with distinctive, divine ready-to-wear clothes.

Vogue fiends, mark your calendars for Aug. 28, the day R.J. Cutler's film, The September issue comes out. But before you prebuy your Fandango ticket, check out the 2.29-second trailer below. It's juicier than juicy, The Devil Wears Prada-ish, but nonfiction! The highlights? Anna admits that her father, once the editor of Evening Standard, convinced her to be a fashion editor and helped her get the Vogue job. Must be nice. Also, designer Thakoon Panichgul likens Anna to Madonna. And Anna tells Oscar de la Renta to axe an outfit she dislikes from his collection. K'tsh, k'tsh!

We have confirmation: Next up for GO International is Thakoon! I know what you're thinking, what happened to the McQueen possibility? Alas, it was a rumor. It happens. But sometimes rumors are true - every Pop reader knows this. In the meantime, the ruggedly feminine Thakoon Panichgul will bring us his designs on a dollar come December, just in time for the holidays. Merry Thakoon!

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Thakoon

Can you believe Thakoon Panichgul didn't know Michelle Obama selected his dress for the Democratic National Convention until he saw it on television? What a pleasant surprise. Well, the budding designer has my vote for designing one of the most wearable and tame collections for Spring as of yet. But don't mistake tame for boring. Quite the contrary, this collection brought out some of the most unique dresses. As well, there were lingerie-undertones making it subtly seductive. Models like Olga Sherer and Catherine McNeil wore frocks with everything from sequined to accordion pleats, tiers to transparent panels, and sophisticated floral prints. A few jumpsuits and skirts showed, but dresses did most of the wowing. Deep greens, reds, and pinks lent whimsy, while black and ivory tempered them beautifully. Surprisingly, a couple models wore midriff-baring crop tops, but this was done with utmost taste. Grandpa silk cardigans were also incorporated to balance the sexiness.

Designer Spotlight: Thakoon

Since his runway debut in 2005, Thakoon Panichgul has swept the industry by storm with his feminine, unique designs.

The New York designer's forte is turning simple fabrics into couture shapes. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Thakoon stated, "The modern definition of glamour is about having the confidence to wear casual yet intricate, cerebral designs. This is the idea I started with."

His 2008 Fall collection is yet another successful journey through his artistic expression of organic and asymmetrical cuts. Watch out for more stunning creations from the young, celebrated designer.

Fab Flash: Vogue's First Film

If you've ever wondered what really goes on behind the doors at Vogue, your curiosity can soon be quenched. After eight months of open access to Anna Wintour and her team, film director R.J. Cutler will debut his chronicle, The September Issue, this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. “My observation with the creativity in the hallways and offices is that Vogue is like the mist. You don’t think it’s raining and all of a sudden you’re soaking wet,” Cutler said.

The movie centers around the creation of Vogue's biggest issue - September 2007 - which Cutler credits as Wintour's idea. Cutler also follows Wintour's personal relationships with her late father Charles Wintour and daughter Bee Shaffer. Guest appearances include Thakoon Panichgul, Oscar de la Renta, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Last night in New York City, the who's who of the fashion community gathered for the announcement of the 2008 CFDA Fashion Awards nominations.

Akin to the fashion Oscars, the actual 2008 CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony will take place at the New York Public Library on June 2, and the nominated designers for the top awards will be judged on both their Spring and Fall 2008 collections.
