Trend Alert: The Trench Dress

I've always been a fan of Ginnifer Goodwin's sleek style. She manages to give simple pieces a unique twist. Case in point: her Camilla and Marc silk trench dress. Wearing her jacket as a dress alludes to mystery. Is she or isn't she wearing something underneath? Only the wearer remains the wiser.

The trick to pulling this off is wearing a thinner trench made out of silk, satin, or a light cotton. That way, it looks more like a dress, and less like a coat. There are also a couple of "real" trench dresses available for those who don't like drafts. Me? I already own a light cotton trench, so layering it with a thin slip should do the trick.

Marder added, "Although Gisele was photographed while pregnant, most of the shots have been retouched to respect her privacy during this wonderful and personal time in her life." 'Tis true - I'm focusing on the allure of the classic trench, not Gisele's growing belly. If you haven't seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I highly suggest you check it out. I'm not the only one smitten with the movie. Tanita Pe loved the movie so much, she created a Benjamin Button-inspired look highlighting a marvelous trench coat and amazing accessories. Her mix of modern clothing and vintage jewels is perfection; I call it laid-back luxe.

As Winter progresses the days seem to get nippier and nippier. I get cold easily so jackets are always on my mind. I landed on a goldmine when I found this Soft Trench Coat ($55, originally $148) at Gap. The picture doesn't do it justice; the wool blend is so soft and the cut is fabulous. It looks nice buttoned up, but I love it worn open. Word to the wise, this coat runs big, so size down. Hurry up, they're flying off the racks . . .

The weather hasn't yet reached extreme temperatures, but it's always good to think ahead, especially when it comes to outerwear. That way, you're not stuck wearing a drab coat because you were slack to buy the one you loved a month ago.

That's precisely what my mentality was when I got this Banana Republic Wool Trenchcoat ($250). Actually, Gwyneth Paltrow's slick military coat reminded me that I need a new cool coat to fight the cold. I immediately turned to BR because it always delivers outstanding outerwear (the gray one I got two years ago still looks new). I highly recommend this one.
