It's going to be a big night for Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. While the rest of her cohorts are busy with love problems, Serena has bigger fish to fry with a surprise visit from her long lost father. For her much anticipated family reunion, the Upper East Sider layered a sleek chocolate trench coat over a maroon dress by Porter Grey, charcoal ribbed tights, and platform pumps. Such a pretty, polished ensemble, but is it enough to win her father's heart? I guess we'll have to wait and see . . .

Banana Republic Gives Us Utility Chic For Fall '10

For Fall '10, Banana Republic heightened the fashion quotient on its signature utilitarian aesthetic. The brand's creative director, Simon Kneen, succinctly describes the collection as a "remix of the modern wardrobe." We can't stop lusting over the array of olive green silk dresses, chunky cable knit cardis, and slick cargo pants. More to mull over were trenches, tailored wool coats, blazers, and waxed cotton jackets. In fact, I have a very similar version of that black waxed belted coat (right) - it's still one of my Fall essentials - circa Banana Republic '03. Keep on for more fantastically affordable fashions . . .

Look of the Day: Sock It to Me

Raccoon_hime was thinking outside the fashion box today. Notice how she layered a pair of black over-the-knee socks on top of her textured tights - cute. I also like how she tempered her bountiful floral frock with a dark trench coat and combat booties. Sock it to me!

Keira, can I sift through your Burberry coat collection please? Here's the Brit stunner in a gray textural trench. And yes, it's Burberry. Not too long ago we showed you 15 crisp trenches to shop, but let's get wrinkled and crinkled. I hate ironing, so I'm a fan. All I need are those clunky black satin Miu Miu shoes and I'm Keira-ed out - not a bad place to be.

First we gave you 15 perfect white shirts. We continue our Back to Basics tour with what sits on top of the shirt - a coat. Trench coat, to be exact. This style of outerwear has been around since World War I. It was first made for British and French soldiers. Of course, we can't mention trench coats without mentioning Burberry, one of its inventors. The trench has come a long way since, and has taken a life of its own. Cropped, long, embellished, colored, printed, metallic - the possibilities are endless. Proceed to discover my favorites.

It's the crème de la crème of outerwear. She'll have no problem crushing the bone-chilling temperatures and gusty winds in this leather baby. Yes, such buttery soft goodness is pricey, but think of it as a lifetime investment. You know I will. Side note: how sexy is it to don a mini underneath it all?

Trend Alert: The Trench Dress

I've always been a fan of Ginnifer Goodwin's sleek style. She manages to give simple pieces a unique twist. Case in point: her Camilla and Marc silk trench dress. Wearing her jacket as a dress alludes to mystery. Is she or isn't she wearing something underneath? Only the wearer remains the wiser.

The trick to pulling this off is wearing a thinner trench made out of silk, satin, or a light cotton. That way, it looks more like a dress, and less like a coat. There are also a couple of "real" trench dresses available for those who don't like drafts. Me? I already own a light cotton trench, so layering it with a thin slip should do the trick.
