Try on a Tweed Skirt

If there is one classic wardrobe item you should buy this Fall, it is a tweed skirt. It's hard to get more timeless than this-a tweed skirt would work in almost any fashion moment of the 20th century-and pencil-style skirts in particular are very big this season. Plus, they're hard to wrinkle, they look great with tights and tall boots, and they transition well from the office to dining out. Here are my picks at both designer and non-designer prices.

Steven Alan Fall 2012

Our New York Fashion Week kickoff began this morning with Steven Alan. For Fall, the designer showed another batch of covetable casual-cum-cool offerings pairing his signature modern classic style with a bold touch of Mexican and folk influence. Full red skirts were paired with riding jackets and fedora hats and structured striped wool vests with slightly flared pants, and there was even a cute vintage-inspired tweed jumpsuit styled with a button-up blouse and cardigan. For a soft touch, the designer also supplied sweet peplum-embellished floral and striped dresses, plaid shirt dresses, and, for a little shine, black and gold brocade dresses and trousers. Couture Fashion Week: Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld put together an in-flight crew of the chicest kind. His Spring '12 Couture collection modernized and glamorized vintage flight attendant uniforms, outfitting his models in the same knee-length skirt suits and sheaths, albeit with Karl's eye for embellishment and detail. He quite literally took us to the skies (complete with gravity-defying hair!), drawing inspiration not only from the structure and silhouettes, but also using an entire palette of blue, ranging from soft powder blue frocks to decadent midnight blue sequined gowns. He marries the intricacy of paillette-dotted gowns, proportional play, and the most delicate of drop earrings with practicality - no over-the-top footwear and a form of the label's shifts and tweeds still intact. He speaks to the whimsy without compromising what the Chanel client wants - classics, wearability.

Trends: Sequins, ladylike, sheer, volume, and cutout shoulders.
Colors: All shades of blue, white.
Key Look: The deep v-neck sequined cocktail dress with shrug layered underneath has Diane Kruger written all over it.
Accessories: Multi-strap sequin pumps, long dangling earrings, feather-adorned headpieces.

Rest assured, this collection is free of over-the-top Bollywood clichés, instead offering up imperial references in its homage to Bombay. While it highlights Chanel's expertise - suiting, ladylike dressing, rich texture, and layers of pretty pearls - it all marries perfectly with a beautiful departure to a more exotic aesthetic. Revealing that "most of the inspiration is from Indian men’s clothes rather than women’s clothes," Lagerfeld's parade of dresses and skirts over pants, gold-embroidered tunics, beaded sandals, and flat booties speaks both to bohemian decadence and wearability.
