The Key to Getting United Bamboo's Stay-Put Shimmer Eye Makeup

For United Bamboo's Spring 2012 show, Shiseido's artistic director, Dick Page, was able to create the chicest of shimmery makeup looks without a smudge or fallen fleck in sight. Of the smoky palette, Page quipped, "It doesn't budge; it's bulletproof." But just how did he keep such a dramatic, particle-heavy look from moving southward? It's all in the formula and technique.

To create a solid base for the eye shadow, Page first prepped lids using a fluff brush dipped in powder. He then applied the brand's multidimensional, metallic Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Patina ($25), which, because of its cream-based formulation, holds onto lids without the slippage factor. Tip: if you try this look out on your own, give it extra stay-put power like Page did by applying a cream-based black liner on your upper lashes. Go over the liner with a similar color (Page used Caviar Shimmering Eye Color, a glossy black) for more intensity. Finish by waterlining with a black eyeliner pencil, and you'll have a sophisticated, polished look that will go with just about any ensemble.

Contemporary designer United Bamboo debuted a floral print suit in their Pre-Fall collection. I love florals, but it's usually associated with soft, flowy things rather than a structured pant and jacket. It's certainly a more retro, whimsical take on a traditional work uniform. The standards for beauty have truly reached impossible heights. Now, not only do you have to be uberthin to be considered beautiful, you can't even be human!

Replacing stick-thin human models with feline ones, fashion line United Bamboo has given new meaning to "cat walk" with its limited edition 2010 calendar featuring little furries modeling its ready-to-wear line. (In case you're wondering - they're already out of stock!) I have to say, these cats do make the garments look quite fetching! And they're pretty good at smiling with their (cat's) eyes.

I'm a huge fan of United Bamboo, but it's so hard finding their stuff outside NYC. Lucky for me and fellow fans, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The brand has just launched a new site complete with online shopping for ladies and gents. Like its clothing, the site is clean, minimal, and modern. Each section is categorized for easy searching and there's also a hefty sale going on. I think I already fell in love with this embellished sweatshirt. Swoon.

Backstage Beauty: United Bamboo

I always enjoy United Bamboo shows because the clothing is forward-thinking. At today's show, the makeup was just as innovative, featuring a double-toned effect on eyes. In creating this look, Dick Page, Artistic Director of Shiseido The Makeup, referred to how teenage girls experiment with makeup. "It's probably more like what teenage girls of my generation would have liked, back in the 1700s," he joked.

As complex as the effect is, this look uses relatively few products. Page used the Color Stick on eyes, then brushed on a shiny, silvery aqua on the inner corner of the eye and the lid. Then, the outer eye gets a wing of copper-hued shadow. Skin was essentially bare-just a bit of concealer and powder-and lips literally were bare. Page sent the models out with nothing but lip balm, which inspired me to go nude for the rest of the day. (Well, on my lips, at least.)

New York Fashion Week Trend Alert: Going Tribal

One of the the more print inducing trends on the Spring runways was Going Tribal. An array of batik prints, nature-inspired, exotic and tropical prints will provide fabulous fashion fare. DKNY went tribal with a more subdued palette, youthful shapes, and obi belts; Oscar de la Renta knows how to deliver tribal to purveyors of luxury, and Diane von Furstenberg's "Under the Volcano" theme gave way to vivacious tribal delights. You can hear me talk about more about all the Spring trends here but this is one of my faves; there's just so many tribal trips you can take!

A Kitchen With Personality

A recent top designer tip was to give your kitchen personality. A lovely idea and well done here with the stars, red accents, and geometric patterns. If only I can come up with a similar theme that does well the kitchen of my rental house with medium brown units, dark green marble-effect countertops, yellow walls, and light bamboo floors. I love this retro look in the picture, but it clearly won't work in my happier rainbow kitchen. Anyone out there with great ideas for my color scheme?
