In the 1990s, it was all about the "big six" models, an aesthetically-blessed group that consisted of top earners such as Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford.

While a debate exists over who coined the term supermodel, Swedish model Lisa Fonssagrives, who was at the height of her career from the '30s through the '50s, is often credited as the world's first. But many models who came afterward earned legendary status. So to see what some of these famed models are up to now, just read on.

Fab Ad: Gucci Timepieces, Spring '10

At first glance, I thought the youthful cutie in Gucci's Spring '10 watch campaign was Miranda Kerr. Way wrong: the beauty pictured in the black and white backdrop is actually the lovely Veruschka. The photo, which dates back to the '60s, was taken from the Gucci archives and layered with an image of Gucci's new timepiece. Similar process to what Stella McCartney did for her Spring campaign, but with a Veruschka and the late actor Peter Sellers instead of the family dog. There's no better way to show off the meaning of timeless beauty than with Veruschka looking so elegant and chic in her floppy hat and Gucci logo-adorned bags. The watch is pretty awesome, too. If case you haven't noticed, it's been raining models on Fab. Since we can't attend the upcoming MET Costume Institute Gala, Model as Muse exhibit in NYC (tear), we created our own model exhibits for your viewing pleasure - it was pretty awesome, huh? Contortionist or model? Here she is. One cannot be a model fan without paying tribute to the greats. Meet Veruschka. One of the ripest models of the '60s. The German countess arrived in NYC and her amazonian looks quickly took the city by storm. At 6'1", with size 13 feet, she had the keen ability to seduce with her limbs, and she did so all over the world with her boyfriend photographer, Franco Rubartelli (who captured her infamous body paint photos). Italian film buff? Then you've seen her famous scene in Blowup. If not - a Fab '60s Antonioni mod film you should Netflix. At the beginning of the scene she announces, "Here I am." Her costar David Hemmings declared, "She moves like nobody on earth." Meet Veruschka, and you'll know what he meant . . .

On Our Radar: The Costume Institute Celebrates Models

Models have paid their dues in the industry so it's high time someone pays them the respect they deserve. That someone will be The Costume Institute Gala in their upcoming presentation dubbed, "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” which explores fashion, and the constantly changing ideas of beauty.

The exhibit raises the question of models serving as designer muses. Marc Jacobs, honorary chairman for the exhibit, states:

“The idea of muses or models, whether it is someone you know or someone you have seen in an image, someone of your imagination or a creature of your own invention, is important to every designer and every collection. I hate talking about inspiration, but everyone needs a catalyst. We look at this person, this model, this muse, and we design for her. It seems like a kind of fundamental thing, but wide open for lots of great clothes.”
