I'm inspired after seeing Fab's picks for chic Winter vests. Unfortunately, a shearling or faux fur piece isn't going to work on all of the long Winter hikes I have scheduled for the New Year. I'll need something that keeps me warm, is great for layering, but is also extremely durable. I'm also looking for a vest that has enough pockets to store essentials and is made of weatherproof materials. Here's what I'm spying (clockwise from top left): Columbia Melange Maven Down Vest ($69), Marmot Venus Vest ($130), Nike Allure Vest ($130), Lightweight Puffer Vest ($40), Isis Whisper Hoodie Vest ($100), Outdoor Research Aria Down Vest ($100), The North Face Oh Snap Vest ($180). Vests continue to serve as favorite layering tools. And it's time to get furry. Leather, denim, and studded vests are too weak right now - it's high time fashion meets function. I recently scored a cheap blond fur vest from American Eagle Outfitters, it even has a cute plaid lining. I've pretty much been throwing it over everything, and I'm trying to find a chichi enough event to wear it with a long gown a la Elizabeth Hurley. But Nicole Richie models it for everyday, if you can stop staring at her mammoth white Balenciaga and focus on her foxy furry.

Menswear vests are still in, but now is the ideal time to cozy up to a cable-knit sweater vest. It whispers Fall, and keeps you warm enough without suffocating. You can wear it over a tank to show off your arms or a long-sleeve tee when it gets super chilly. I admit, this New York & Co. Belted Cable Sweater Vest ($28, originally $40) doesn't look as cozy, but for such a major price cut, it will do. It has the same serene hue and can be wrapped around your body for warmth. It also comes in wine, black, and heather gray. Alloy has a gray version that's really nice, too. For a tinge of severity, I would wear it over rockin' liquid leggings and booties.

The transitioning weather has me in a bit of a funk. See, one minute it's hot, and the next minute, it's nippy. This weekend, I'm taking a day trip to beautiful Napa Valley. It's going to be scorcher, the weatherman predicted a heatwave - don't you love Indian Summers? Haute Hippie Elongated Feather Vest: Love It or Hate It?

I'm a huge advocate of vests, but I'm afraid this Haute Hippie Elongated Feather Vest ($695) would ruin my outfit instead of enhancing it. Am I being way harsh? It almost resembles a feather boa, but thicker. I must say though, the dusty pink color is just lovely. I think it would have been much more wearable if it was cropped. What do you think?
