Double Take: Michael Kors Gets Inspired by Balenciaga

Can you blame Michael Kors for drawing inspiration from Balenciaga's Fall collection for his 2009 Resort line? I can't. Nicolas Ghesquière's collection, especially this particular black cut-out dress on Natasha Poly, was so cutting edge, heck, I would be inspired by it if I were a designer. While many of you may think it's weird for one designer to copy another so blatantly, it's completely acceptable in fashion. I mean, hello, there isn't a soul who hasn't copied Yves Saint Laurent's "Le Smoking" tuxedo suit! Kors made the dress, worn by model Vlada Roslyakova, his own by being more subtle with his cut-out shoulders, and by choosing a blue, abstract floral design. When it comes to fashion-forward designs, I say, the more the merrier.

You may not be able to pronounce her Russian last name, but it's to your benefit to memorize Vlada Roslyakova's face because you'll be seeing it around for a long time.

She was born July 8, 1987 as Elena Roslyakova, but she changed her name to Vlada so that she wouldn't be confused with fellow model Elena Rosenkova.

Though formerly working in Asia, Vlada became world famous in 2005 when she started booking jobs for Moschino Cheap & Chic, Calvin Klein, and Nina Ricci. What sets her apart is her unique walk - she tends to lean back - and her baggy blue eyes. Vlada is beautiful, but her fair skin and moody eyes keep her from being typical. And you know Fab is all about the atypical!

Style For Style: Buh-Bye Legwear Bulges

Russian model Vlada Roslyakova is wearing tights, but you don't see any side bulges, aka love handles, distracting from her look. Well, in her case, it's probably because she doesn't have any, but what are we mere mortals supposed to do when our legwear elastic digs into our skin, giving us those nasty, lady lumps?

Do the following to all your bulge-causing tights, especially the ones with control tops:

Wear your tights with nothing over them, and stand in front of a mirror.
Grab a pair of scissors, to start the process.
Take the scissor and make a small slit on either side of your tights. You can make the slit as small or big, depending on how tough the elastic is. Usually making a slit on one side is sufficient, but if the elastic is still causing bulges, slit the other side as well.

The point is to tear the slit until all bulges are eliminated. Just be careful not to make the tear too big, as you don't want your tights falling down or ruined. Good luck and say bon voyage to bulge!

Alber Elbaz concocted a drape-happy, tulle-loving, moody, detailed Fall '09 collection for Lanvin. To conclude it, behold a model stampede with Lily Donaldson and (a giggling) Raquel Zimmermann at the front. Following closely behind are Natasha Poly, Ali Stephens, Marina Peres, Tanya D., and Vlada Roslyakova. If I were you, I'd move out the way . . .

Fab Ad: Christian Lacroix Fall/Winter 2007

Look at those big baby blues! That's all I can think when I see this Fall Christian Lacroix campaign, shot by Terry Richardson. Vlada Roslyakova's eyes just pop - and then after the eyes, I look at the bright blue background. Finally, my eyes focus on the clothes, which, once noticed, have some beautiful detailing going on. The brocade in the left photo is so rich, and the collar in the right photo is so lush.

But I'm not sure that's the order of focus you want for your advertising campaign - especially if you're trying to sell clothes, not blue eyes or blue backgrounds. (I guess it does tie in with the collection though as the runway show had the models against a blue background, walking on a blue floor.) What do you think - what do your eyes focus on first?
