Why Wedding Dresses Cost So Much

Are wedding dresses really worth thousands of dollars? Not really, according to University of Chicago economist Veronica Guerrieri, who understands the financial turmoil brides are going through as she herself married last year. In fact, she says the reason why the dresses are so pricey is because women are buying into the emotional wedding hype and are willing to pay the high prices. NPR says:

"I think that on average there is a lot of status and signaling going on wedding day," Guerrieri says.

A bride's dress can signal how wealthy she is, what her status in society is. But it can also signal how seriously she's taking this marriage.

Spending a lot on a wedding dress is a way for the bride to tell the world, "I'm only going to do this once, so I'm doing it big."

Although the fabric and workmanship may increase the cost of the dress, the price tag still seems to be overinflated because of the whole "your wedding is the most important day in your life" idea. An NPR commenter made an interesting point when she noted that centuries ago, women used to consider their wedding dresses as "one's best dress" and wear them on special occasions. Perhaps we should start considering wedding dresses that aren't too over-the-top and ones that we can wear over and over again at nice events.

With wedding season in full swing, we caught up with wedding dress extraordinaire Reem Acra to talk about her Spring 2012 collection, the upcoming royal wedding, and designing dresses for princesses. FabSugar: What kind of woman did you have in mind when designing your Spring 2012 collection?

Reem Acra: Princesses – all of the princesses I've dressed in the past couple of years. I've thought about them and what they would have liked and what they would want to see from me. I made the collection thinking about all of them and their dreams. It's for all of the brides - because they're all princesses to me.

FS: How would you describe Kate Middleton's wedding style?

RA: I am very excited to see what Kate Middleton is going to wear. She is very modern, but she has to be classic at the same time.

FS: What's the craziest wedding dress you've been asked to design?

RA: I've been asked to do lots of cha-cha. Stuff, stuff, stuff, and too many embellishments. I always refuse; I can't design something that won't look good.

FS: What kind of advice can you give a bride-to-be when looking for the perfect dress?

RA: I think you should be yourself whether you're the fun flirtatious or serious type. After all, it's your wedding day and you should enjoy it. The dress is extremely important in my eyes, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a designer, but because I know if you look good on the outside, you're confident and more powerful in the inside, and you will exude that happiness and power to all of your friends and family around you.

FS:
Besides the dress, what else should a bride splurge for on her wedding day?

RA: Flowers. They add the perfect touch to any situation. You don't need anything else.

Once you take care of early must dos after your engagement, it's time to start the wedding dress hunt! I thought I'd share with you the words of wisdom I gleaned from my married and soon-to-be-married friends when I was searching for "the one." So, from friend to friend, here are dress shopping tips from my wonderfully helpful and sweet gal pals:

Go with people who really know you. There are so many beautiful dresses that it's easy to get overwhelmed. It's nice to have people who can say "that dress is (or isn't) you." - Tessa
Only word of advice: TAKE YOUR TIME. Don't feel rushed or pushed into buying anything. I bought my dress the first day I went out shopping. I liked it, but at the end of the day, felt like I had settled . . . my only wedding regret! - Ashlyn
Shopping for my wedding dress was the hardest decision to make in the whole wedding process! But ultimately, after countless hours of online and in-store browsing, I found a designer that I loved (Jenny Packham) and went to every store in California that carried her dresses and tried them on over and over. I thought I wanted a very low-cut front and back with more of a sexy silky look, but none of those looked like a wedding dress, just beautiful gowns. In the end I think it's important to go with what looks the best on you, not what you want to look the best on you. - Kendall
A tan is essential, even if it's the spray kind. Listen to your mamma, but go with your gut. Don't eat Mexican food directly before trying on dresses. Wear cute underwear, people are going to see them. Avoid impulsivity. - Julianne
