Milan Fashion Week: Wunderkind

You're probably more familiar with German designer Wolfgang Joop from his eponymous Joop! line, established way back in 1979. But his second Wunderkind label, launched in 2003, is where the action is now.

The Spring 2007 collection, which was just shown at Milan Fashion Week, is wondrous indeed-both in its wearablity and its creativity. I particularly like the use of big but delicate floral patterns, bell-shaped skirts, and lace cut-outs, all of which call to mind a fairytale vibe. I could, however, live without ever wearing one of those Bo-Peep-style bonnets. Remarkably, Wunderkind is just as adept at creative edgy professional wear as it is dreaming up totally impractical beach attire. To see the looks for yourself,

The Ides of March: Victory, but Not a Landslide

George Clooney takes the director's chair for political drama The Ides of March, which he also stars in as Pennsylvania governor and presidential hopeful Mike Morris. The real star of the film is Ryan Gosling, though, as a crackerjack strategist working on Morris's campaign during the Democratic primary. With that kind of star power behind and in front of the camera, I was expecting an immaculately crafted thriller, but The Ides of March doesn't live up to its potential.

The premise is as promising as Morris's Obama-esque campaign posters: Stephen (Gosling) is a key part of Morris's bid for a presidential nomination, not just for his savvy but for his optimism and belief in the candidate. When Stephen discovers a sticky situation the governor is involved in, he has to decide his next move. At the same time, he's being courted by a rival campaign, which also challenges his loyalty to Morris.

As Stephen transforms from an idealistic employee into a jaded cog in the machine, his trajectory is engaging, but could be more riveting. Though the plot keeps you intrigued long enough to find out what happens to the characters, there's not enough background or development to make you care about any of them. Alexander Wang fans unite: the boy wunderkind is finally launching a swimwear collection set to debut for resort. Details are still on the hush, but we do know that the line is set to feature, "sexy cutouts and athletic references." We're crossing our fingers that Wang's waterproof offerings look something like the tomboy-cool, swim-like pieces he showed in his Spring '09 and Spring '10 collection seen below.

The Social Network: The Real People Behind the Actors

The Social Network is out this Friday, and the buzz is loud on this one. Not only does the movie look intense and dramatic, but it revolves around the creation of Facebook, a website many of us spend much of our time on. Though many will assert that the screenplay is only loosely inspired by true events, the characters in the movie are all based on real people.
