Model Mania at Met's Costume Institute Gala!

Models are always welcomed at Met's Costume Institute Gala, but since last night's exhibit was all about them, they felt way more at home. Current models like Hana Soukupova, Coco Rocha, and Isabeli Fontana mixed and mingled with classics like Stella Tennant, Alek Wek, and Maggie Rizer, as well as old-school Supers Amber Valletta, Kristen McMenamy, and Nadja Auermann (left). It was a site to be seen; one that melted my heart. Every one of them ruled, and one young blond model even came on the arm of a Hollywood actor! Let the model mania begin . . .

Fashion Week Quickie: Arise Magazine Brings Africana to Fashion Week

One of the things I love about attending Fashion Week is the abundance of fash lit. Virtually every local NYC magazine and newspaper creates special spreads for the tents, and Fashion Week Daily is my everyday fashion breakfast/waiting reading.

This Friday, I will keep my eyes peeled for Arise Magazine. The new monthly Nigerian-based magazine will debut with the African Fashion Collective fashion show at the tents. The show will give four African designers the spotlight, each unveiling 12 to 15 looks in the show.

ThisDay chairman and chief executive officer Nduka Obaigbena states, “I think it’s about an opportunity . . . Africa has been under-reported and under-recognized. Meanwhile, so many big talents have African origins. We think it’s time Africa gets the rightful recognition in the global cultural landscape, and its fashion contribution is one of them.”

The premiere issue features Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede and Alek Wek on its cover, and delivers African accomplishments in business, politics, fashion, music, and overall culture. The next cover model? President Barack Obama.

Nina Garcia Answers Our Fab Questions, Part III

Nina is the gift that keeps on giving! The ELLE fashion director and Project Runway judge has been answering all of our burning questions and here are some more! I am finding these answers helpful in many aspects of fashion so I hope you are too.

Why do you think the fashion world is so whitewashed? What will it take for runways and editorials to become more diverse? Do you think it will ever happen?

I do hope that fashion more willingly will embrace diversity. Unfortunately, fashion is going through a phase where there is a particular type and model look that is being cast. Mr. Yves Saint Laurent had a wonderful eye for African American models and they would dominate his runway shows. At ELLE, we are consciencious of our readers and celebrate diversity in our pages-through ethnicity, age, and body type. We were the first magazine to have an African American on the cover - Alek Wek - and just recently shot Miss Universe, Rio Mory, who is from Japan. Fashion is cyclical and I am sure that like any phase, we will evolve from this too.

What do you think of how fashion blogging has affected the fashion industry?

I think blogging has made the fashion industry much more accessible. From broadcasting fashion week shows live and insiders posting their thoughts and finds online has not only garnered more interest in fashion and helped answer many misconceptions but is also an excellent platform for new designers to gain exposure. Blogging is also instant gratification and the trend will put pressures on established designers to turn around new products faster than ever.

Is it smarter to attend college in New York if I want to work in this industry?

Yes I think attending college in New York is an excellent choice if you want to work in fashion. The city offers endless cultural options -from art exhibitions, theater and the basic interaction between urban dwellers. Just walking out on the street you are bombarded with diversity that is endlessly inspiring and stimulates creativity and that knowledge with help you succeed in the fashion industry.

What Project Runway designer's clothing would you be most likely to wear?

Laura Bennett, Daniel V. Emmet Mccartney, Kara Janx and all of the past winners.

I am handbag obsessed, if I could choose only one handbag for day and one for night, which would you choose?

For day I prefer a beautiful soft leather tote or shoulder bag. If you want a designer bag, my recommendation would be to invest in the Chanel 2.5. It is a worthy investment and a bag that you can wear forever. For evening, it is all about the clutch bag. If you want a classic bag, I would opt for Nancy Gonzalez clutch in an exotic skin.

Model of the Week: Yoanna House

If you're an avid fan of America's Next Top Model, you'll definitely recognize this Model of the Week, Yoanna House. Born on April 9, 1980 in Jacksonville, Florida, she can credit her amazing looks to her Mexican mother and her Canadian father. (She is also very close to her grandmother - who's actually the one who got her interested in fashion and modeling!)

After losing 50 lbs, Yoanna decided to try out for America's Next Top Model. Good thing she applied because her big break in the industry was winning season two! Her prizes included a cover of the Sephora catalog, a contract with IMG and a photo spread for Jane magazine. Since then, she has modeled around the world and is the host of "The Look for Less" on the Style Network.

What is the most memorable show you walked in?
My most memorable show I ever walked in was one of the first ones for Custo Barcelona with Alek Wek and Amanda Moore in the forefront. I was on cloud nine.

If your house was burning down and you could only save one clothing item, what would it be and why?
I imagine it being a very hard situation to collect my thoughts and grab one clothing item. I would probably just grab my box of vintage cuffs and Chanel accessories.

What is one destination you still need a stamp for on your passport?
I imagine staying in a castle somewhere in Scotland or learning to surf on a magical beach in the Canary Islands of Spain. I imagine the men and the beaches to be gorgeous, warm and irresistible. Good times for sure!

Who are your favorite designers?
Dolce and Gabbana; their cuts are so womanly and flattering around the bosom, and they lift my tush just enough. The Chloe team has really been cooking up amazing pieces especially in the past few seasons. I picked up two romantic dresses that I am wearing throughout this Summer in a luscious lilac and cream.

I have also loved Chanel since I was a little girl. There is something so hypnotizing about the logo and the femininity behind the suits. I am also hooked on the feel and look of Agent Provocateur lingerie, especially the push-up bras and corsets; they make your waist teeny weeny. I go to the Gap and J.Crew for basics, Emanuel Ungaro for evening, Wolford for body suits and tights - they are a must for chilly weather. And Marc by Marc Jacobs is a sure bet.
