As we come to the close of another year, I've been counting down the best in entertainment from over the past 12 months. But let's not forget that we're also celebrating the end of the decade, so you know what that means - a recap of the top music, movies, and TV from 2000-2009! There have been so many creative, smart, and fun choices to keep me busy that it's hard to decide which ones deserve top honors. So beginning with films, here are my favorites, in no particular order. Amélie Poulain took not only France but the world by storm. We were all swept away by her quirky French je ne sais quoi, awkward naïveté, and childlike demeanor. Of course, the movie Amélie also made an impression from an artistic standpoint. From the scenery and the tunes to the coloring and the editing, I was encapsulated in Amélie's fantastical world in every sense. The sets, particularly her apartment, were as captivating as the innocent girl, and I've always been intrigued by her bedroom. read more. To begin, you must set the stage with a metallic rouge wallpaper like Amelie's, and paint your wainscoting to match. The Graham & Brown Serenity Wallpaper ($60/bolt) shares a gold-on-red pattern with Oriental charm and a delicate, starry design.
You can find her prints by Michael Sowa, the Fowl With Pearls ($14.99) and Filmhound ($14.99), at Art.com, and have them hung in unmatching frames for the same peculiar, offbeat look. As for the comforter, which Su Casa member eunyee9 asked about, I couldn't track the exact design. But, I think the Dream Silk Comforter ($349), with its peachy champagne color, interesting quilting pattern, and plush heft is a good match. Fabcon: Audrey Tautou

French films have a distinct quirkiness that I crave from time to time. I recently watched, for the hundredth time, Amélie starring cute-as-a-button, French actress, Audrey Tautou. She is a hot ticket slated to play Coco Chanel in an upcoming flick and rumored to be the next face of Chanel No. 5 perfume. Her short banged bob and vintage wardrobe made me want to visit my hairstylist sooner than scheduled, and wear my hemline a little longer.

If Clémence Poésy is France's eccentric child, and Marion Cotillard is the sophisticated sister, then Audrey is the wise, ripe daughter that is utterly comfortable in her skin.

One look at Audrey's clothes and pixie haircut and it's obvious that the girl cares about fashion. When on the red carpet, she's quirky but always polished. Her choice of dresses makes it known that she's not OK with being a fashion sheep. Her off-carpet style usually consists of relaxed jeans, paired with a cool jacket and easy flats. With her petite frame and at-ease style, I get the sense that for Miss Tatou, shopping is an in-and-out experience. I'd love to accompany her one day!

TV Dinners: Amélie - Crème Brûlée

When PartySugar told me she was planning a movie night party based around French films, I was thrilled to see what she came up with. She's put together an amazing meal consisting of bacon-wrapped chicken breasts, French martinis, and chocolate soufflés, but there's one little thing she's forgotten: the crème brûlée! Whenever I see the film Amélie, the scene where she cracks the crème brûlée gets me every time. It's such an amazing sound and the scene is so adorable.

To make this a classic crème brûlée, simply omit the fresh ginger.

Ginger and Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée
From Bon Appétit, February 1999

For Custard
2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp. chopped peeled fresh ginger
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
5 large egg yolks

For Crème Brûlée
12 tsp. sugar
Sliced tropical fruit (such as mango, papaya and/or kiwi)

Make Custard:

Preheat oven to 325°F. Place three 4-inch-diameter fluted flan dishes in each of two 13-x-9 x-2-in. baking pans or place six 3/4-cup ramekins in 1 pan. Mix cream, sugar, and ginger in heavy medium saucepan. Using small sharp knife, scrape seeds from vanilla bean. Add seeds and bean to saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to simmer. Cover pan, reduce heat to very low and simmer gently 10 minutes to infuse flavors. Strain into large measuring cup.
Whisk yolks in medium bowl until well blended. Gradually whisk in hot cream mixture just to blend. Return custard to measuring cup; divide among dishes. Pour enough hot water into pans to come halfway up sides of dishes. Carefully transfer pans to oven.
Bake custards until almost set in center when pans are gently shaken, about 30 minutes for fluted flan dishes and 35 minutes for ramekins. Using metal spatula, transfer custards in dishes to work surface; cool 30 minutes. Chill at least 3 hours and up to 2 days.

Make Crème Brûlée:

Sprinkle 2 tsp. sugar evenly over each custard. Working with 1 custard at a time, hold culinary blowtorch** so that flame is 2 inches above surface. Direct flame so that sugar melts and browns, about 2 minutes.
Refrigerate until custards are firm again but topping is still brittle, at least 2 hours but no longer than 4 hours so that topping doesn't soften. Garnish crème brûlées with fruit.

** Note: If you don't have access to a culinary blowtorch, you can place the custard dishes on a small baking sheet and broil until sugar begins to caramelize (about 2 minutes) - rotate sheet for even browning.
