The Full-On Fashion Crowd at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

It was a fashion explosion last night at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. Designers, models, editors, photographers, and muses gathered in NYC to see who would win the grand prize - $200,000 and a year of mentoring. Presenters included Lanvin's Alber Elbaz and Nicole Kidman, while Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg played hostesses. Models and actresses dressed up to the freshest of American designers - there were smiles all around. The biggest smile was worn by the winner, Brooklyn-born designer Sophie Theallet, and the runners-up were Patrik Ervell and Monique Pean. A Fabby Halloween: Vogue Queen Bee, Anna Wintour

Do you have the gall to be Vogue editor Anna Wintour for Halloween this year? Then you've got some major competition. Model Snejana Onopka, left, did a spot-on impersonation of Anna in Vogue Paris a while back. Let it be your guide. I first suggest watching The September Issue, you know, as field research. Next, it's imperative to have the following Anna signatures: a perfectly neat bob wig, some form of (faux) fur, dark sunglasses, and slingback sandals with a kitten heel. Also, carry the latest issue of Vogue, hunch over just a tad, and don't crack a smile. I know, it's tough being Anna, but well worth it.

Fab Blab: Carine Roitfeld on Anna Wintour's Job

Carine Roitfeld has revealed that she won't stay at Vogue Paris for much longer. But what will she do? She hinted at filmmaking during a recent chat with the French Le Journal du Dimanche. When asked if one day she will succeed Anna Wintour as American Vogue editor, she said: "I would consider it, but I think I would refuse it. I’m not sure I have her strength. . . . Anna Wintour shows fashion and the collections. She sees everything and imposes her choices. Myself, I leave room for a lot of points of view." After seeing The September Issue, yep, that sounds about right.

The September Issue: Lots of Fashion, Lots of Feeling

Now this is a movie about fashion. Not glorifying it, not mocking it, not fictional. If you too consider fashion to be your number one, you will thoroughly enjoy this film. I'm not saying you're going to want to run to NYC and join the ranks at Vogue, but you will witness what happens behind the scenes, meet the players, and, finally, meet Anna, glasses off. I was lucky enough to chat with the film's director, RJ Cutler, after I viewed the film, and he shined many a light on how the film came about, how it changed his perception of the world of fashion, and how fascinating of a story it is. This is the story of The September Issue . . .

It's a given the film reveals the extensive work that goes into creating the biggest issue of the year. Along the way we visit with Anna, her daughter Bee Shaffer (briefly), and other masthead characters. Most notably, the magazine's famed editor Grace Coddington and comic-reliever André Leon Talley.

RJ Cutler confirmed the movie was all access. It was a very intimate experience: only RJ, one camera man, and one sound man captured the scenes. Naturally, it took a while to gain trust. Especially with Coddington, who needed four months to warm up to the camera. He believes, "We see it clearly." And when Anna opens up about her family toward the end, "The relationship was in a certain place, we found it."

The film is smoothly edited, provides plenty of fashion eye candy - both at Fashion Weeks and photos shoots - and leaves you wanting more. And leaves you feeling more. You feel for Grace, a true artist struggling in a new technology and celebrity-driven zeitgeist. You feel for André when he declares the season "a famine of beauty." You feel for the writer whose piece gets poohed poohed by Anna, but it's Grace who saves him, telling him, "You've got to be tougher."

Grace has the tough Vogue love down. The dynamic between Anna and Grace, who both started working at the fashion bible the same day, had the deepest resonance for Cutler. Cutler explained these women are "at the top of their game and go at it in the cause of beauty. They are changing their world." It's painful to see Grace go through the rejection emotions; it's empowering to see Anna make the decisions.

The director gained a respect and understanding of the infamous fashion industry - as does the watcher. RJ admitted to knowing nothing about fashion when started the project. "On one hand, fashion is frivolous, excessive, indulgent, and vain. It is also essential. It says something to the world. It drives economies - shipping, textiles, journalism, publishing, advertising. It affects the culture and contributes to the definition of beauty." Intrigued? See it, sunglasses off.

Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Patrick Robinson to Host Costume Institute's American Woman Exhibit

Let's see, this year we explored models as muses, the year before we dodged superheroes. 2010's Costume Institute will be all about American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. “The story of the American woman is really a story of the power of fashion to shape and define identity,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute. The exhibit will examine our country's fashion between 1890 and 1940 with articles transferred over from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection. To go with the all-American theme, Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Gap's Patrick Robinson will act as co-chairs for the event. While we patiently wait for next year's red carpet, play our awesome Met Costume Institute Gala Faceoff and win cash prizes!

ICYMI, Anna Wintour made her debut on The Late Show with David Letterman last night to discuss her documentary, The September Issue, and all things fashion. As expected the Vogue editor held her own in her Carolina Herrera dress as Dave dished out the fashion jokes and references to her ice queen reputation - Anna rebuttled, I'm "Lukewarm Royalty with a Whip from Outer Space." Dave even asked her if she's ever put anyone in a headlock. No doubt, Anna prevailed and even showed off her fun sense of humor. Anna, we knew you would be fabulous. Check it out.

I hope you're not getting bored of my continuous fawning over Sienna's wicked style. What can I say? She's an official Fab favorite. This was another big week for her with The September Issue's NYC premiere - she is the celeb cover girl in the film, after all. She and Anna were colorfully fabulous at the premiere in Thakoon and Prada. There was more vivid eye candy where that came from, thanks to Renee Zellweger and Michelle Monaghan, while a certain Brazilian model and British babe prove neutrals are ultra modern.
