Fab Flash: PETA Names Worst-Dressed Celebrities of 2008

PETA announced today that Aretha Franklin is "queen" of their annual worst-dressed list.

The online poll, which scolds those who "drape themselves" in fur, leather, and exotic skins, also named Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, and Marilyn Manson as top offenders.

Aretha Franklin: How 'bout some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for animals? Aretha, when you waddled into the Grammys in yet another vulgar fur, you looked as if you were going to perform "I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles. You might be a queen, but you don't know jack about compassion.
Marilyn Manson: Always draped in leather from head to toe, Manson has enough skeletons in his closet to fill a pet cemetery. As if wearing dead animals isn't foul enough, Manson says that he wears his cow-skin pants 24/7- only peeling the smelly things off to have sex. That alone should be enough to tarnish leather's dated sex appeal. Manson might only be the shock rocker's stage name, but his wardrobe is a real-life tale of blood and guts.

Eva Longoria: Eva Longoria is short on compassion. In her trashy furs, she looks like the streetwalker of Wisteria Lane. Eva is one "desperate housewife" in need of a quickie divorce - from her stylist.
Lindsay Lohan: I Know Who Killed Me isn't just the title of Lindsay Lohan's latest bomb, it's the cry of the animals snuffed out so that this "mean girl" can pose in their pelts. Lindsay, there's no road to recovery for the foxes who are anally electrocuted so that you can look skanky.
Kate Moss: Nothing completes the transition from supermodel to super tramp like a fur coat. If Kate could see clearly through those bleary eyes, maybe she’d clear her closet of those furs.
Kylie Minogue: What does Kylie Minogue have in common with her python purse? They are both cold blooded. Come on Kylie, it's not cool to clutch an accessory made by nailing snakes to a tree and skinning them alive.

Fab Flash: Has PETA Gone Too Far With The "Trollsen Twins?"

PETA launched a new site today specifically targeting the Olsen twins, who they've re-named "Hairy-Kate and Trashly," the "Trollsen Twins," and re-drawn in an unattractive cartoon form. The site features games, videos, merchandise, and you can even take action by sending the Olsens a letter. This is an aggressive attack on PETA's part - do you think they've gone too far this time?

Fab Flash: Eva Mendes Bares All For PETA

Eva Mendes was unveiled today as the newest face of PETA's "Fur? I'd Rather Go Naked" ad campaign. More than 1,000 posters of the ad, shot by photographer Don Flood, are to be plastered around NYC starting next week.

Although Eva admits to wearing fur early in her career, when she "ignorantly wore" a fur wrap her stylist sent her, she now refuses to wear it on the red carpet or for photo shoots. The only fur she'll wear? Faux fur, of course.

Fab Flash: Bebe Goes Anti-Fur

Following in Nicole Miller and Stella McCartney's footsteps, Bebe has announced that it will discontinue selling any products with fur beginning in January 2008.

Over the past year, the clothing chain has been reconsidering their fur policy, and only used fur created as a byproduct. The animal fur they use makes up less than 3 percent of their currently available products.

However, as a Bebe salesgirl alum, I'd like to step in and say that Bebe does use a lot of leather in their designs. Does a company's anti-fur effort mean as much when they also use animal skins? Just some fashion for thought...

Freaky or Fabulous? Paris Vogue Gives Anti-Fur the Finger

European Vogue magazines are pushing some fashion buttons. Alas, fashion must always be exciting, daring, and innovative. Can I get an amen?

First, Vogue Italia's all-black July issue and now editor Carine Roitfeld, with photog Mario Testino and muse Raquel Zimmermann, take a stand for fur. One of the longest standing debates in fashion - and here on Fab - Vogue is clearly saying "in your face antifur advocates." This spread is provocative and aggressive; from the high-octane furs to the black leather to the raccoon-eyed model. It's powerful.

Powerful, but is it freaky or fabulous?

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: Derek Lam

Is it me or is model Anja Rubik constantly in a fur chubby this season? In any case, if a hefty fur coat is what you're seeking, you've climbed up the right tree. Derek Lam's Fall '09 collection was filled with fur coats and vests in an array of colors - white, black, brown, tan, gray. But luxurious fur coats aren't Lam's only forte. Anti-fur readers will appreciate the designer's other well-made, sharp coats.

Moving on from the outerwear department, the designer also delivered sleek suits, leather pants, and gorgeous dresses. Frocks and tops received a heavy draping treatment, but in the most laid-back, nonchalant manner. Gold in the form of skirts, dresses, and tops provided just enough shine to the rather moody color palette. One of the most innovative pieces was this fancy outlined tee. I like it.

Even though my fashion world mostly lives online, I still revel in glossy pages of glorious clothes and beautiful women. That will never change. Magazines constantly strive to create fantastical images showcasing the latest trends and accessories. Some resonate, some flop. Vogue Paris consistently churns out provocative imagery - most recently their stab at anti-fur crusaders. Now, the mag is showcasing the super Cindy Crawford, shot by Inez & Vinoodh, in all her 42-year-old glory. Geez. In addition to the '80s bathing suits, bold jewelry, shocking colors, and sultry cutouts, Cindy proves she's still got it. Those of you reveling in the early '90s revival, feast.

Can You Tell the Difference Between Real and Faux Fur?

I can. But, according to sources, Kate Winslet, an anti-fur advocate, didn't feel the difference when posing au naturel for Vanity Fair. Pre-photo shoot, the magazine told Winslet the blanket was faux. In reality she was posing on a $14,677 silver fox Frette fur throw. Vanity Fair has apologized to the actress for the major mix-up. But we're wondering: Would you be able to tell the difference between real and faux?

Fab Flash: Nicole Miller and Stella McCartney, Fur or Anti?

In response to the NYC Animal Rights' plans to stage a rally outside her Spring 2008 show on September 5, Nicole Miller has announced that she plans to be fur-free starting in the Spring. She says that her current use of fur is "miniscule," about 0.008% of the total items sold under the Nicole Miller label, but after NYC Animal Rights started a smear campaign on their website, with one section dubbed "Nicole Miller Animal Killer," she reconsidered.

Meanwhile, another lady in fashion who is well-known for her anti-fur tendencies, Stella McCartney, is feeling a bit of heat. The designer is finding herself in a sticky situation, as animal welfare campaigners are decrying Adidas, who Stella designs a collection for, for their use of kangaroo leather. Stella herself has made no comment on the matter thus far.

UPDATE: Stella has just issued a statement, vowing that her Adidas by Stella McCartney collection is "100% cruelty-free" and that no leather or fur are used.
