New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Catherine Malandrino

Designer du jour, Catherine Malandrino, showed a bold Spring collection - sometimes, a little too bold. While her feminine and chic designs have recently been celeb favorites I'm not sure we'll be seeing some these newbies grace the red carpet. Malandrino attacked the art trend with fervor and sometimes it hit and sometimes it missed.

Aside from the venue, the Chelsea Art Museum, being over crowded, bold colors and prints dominated the runway. Catherine's strengths - ultra femme dresses, chic tailoring and elegant draping - persevered but her artsy prints and stiff cocktail dresses were questionable. In short, I had a love/hate experience at Malandrino. What do you think?!

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Rebecca Taylor

See this grey melange coat? Already on my Spring wish list! Rebecca Taylor aims high to please the girlie girl and her Spring collection was spot on.

Taylor lightly touched on some of the trends - art, high waists, sequins, sportif, embellishments - while retaining what she is all about: beautiful, wearable clothes. From slip dresses and skirts sprinkled with pedal-like pretties, to patent leather Marni-esque belts and sexy nighttime colors, I can see unalike actresses Emmy Rossum and Carmen Electra - both in the front row - donning these goods. Did I mention the interesting attention to backs? Another theme I've been seeing, Taylor's backs were bold with color blocked outside zippers and fabric paneling. Taylor mixed things up and that coat = love!

The answer is right here in Liz Claiborne: The Legend, The Woman ($17), a memoir written by Liz's husband and business partner, Art Ortenberg. The book details Liz and Art's professional success with the Liz Claiborne brand, along with personal tales of their philanthropic adventures, and Liz's fight with cancer. "Liz left us more than her work," said Art. "Perhaps more than the consequences of her work; she left us herself. The making of that self, and the good she did for others, is the story I tell." Sasha is now the editor-in-chief and creative director of the Austrian publication, while Anja is serving as fashion/art director. Another change: the former monthly mag will transform into a quarterly lifestyle publication. On Our Radar: Gen Art's International Design Competition

Calling all budding fashion designers: Gen Art will start taking submissions for its International Design Competition come Monday, Jan. 19. The winner in each category - women’s ready-to-wear, eveningwear, avant-garde, menswear, and accessories - will be gifted a $5,000 Award for Design Excellence. Eligible participants include student designers and those with less than seven years experience designing under their own name. According to sources, past competitions bolstered the careers of Peter Som and Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte. Deadline for submission is March 17.

Art Elysium Red Carpet: Did You Love It or Hate It?

So the Golden Globes were a major downer. As you know, I am an optimist and there is always a red carpet for us to talk about. Such was the case with the The Art of Elysium 10th Anniversary Gala that took place Saturday night. While I'm sure some stars were bummed they didn't get to dress up and parade the Golden Globes red carpet, some shined on a lesser known red carpet. Nonetheless, this is only the beginning of awards season, stay tuned for the SAG Awards and the Grammys. Until then, make sure to vote on the red carpet looks from the Art Elysium gala!

On Our Radar: Art Basel Miami Beach

Miami Beach is always a happening place, but come December 6-9, things are taking a more international turn. The revered art show Art Basel Miami Beach is taking place and the fashion flock wouldn't miss it for the world.

As part of the festivities, Alberta Ferretti is planning to restage her recent Grecian-inspired Spring runway show at a Miami Beach palazzo on December 8. Meanwhile, Cartier is creating The Cartier Dome in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden to house the new Inde Mysterieuse collection and other pieces that have never been seen in the US. The Dome will be open to the public every day from 2-4 pm during the artsy festivities.

Art Elysium Red Carpet: Ali Larter

Ali Larter is going Grecian here in her drop-waisted toga-esque J. Mendel dress at the Art Elysium Gala. She should have gotten it hemmed so we could see her shoes, and I am not so sure about this color on her, but I do think her hair and makeup is beautifully simple. What do you think?
