Double Take: Yves Saint Laurent and Austin Scarlett

I've long thought that Project Runway alum Austin Scarlett and the late Yves Saint Laurent share an uncanny resemblance to one another. Granted, the 27-year-old Austin resembles a 38-year-old Yves in 1974, but one can't deny the physical similarities. They're both tall, lean, have square jaw lines, wear oversize square glasses, and have thin lips and golden hair. Oh, and both are fashion designers, but clearly their likeness doesn't go beyond the physical. I doubt anyone's talent, including Austin's, will be comparable to that of genius Yves - but you never know, right? It's nice to know we have someone to remind us of the dapper lad from Algeria who roamed and fashioned the streets of Paris in the '70s.

Project Runway, Episode 1 "Let's Start From the Beginning"

Project Runway fanatics know that last night's challenge - creating clothes out of items from Gristedes Supermarket - was nothing new. Hence the title of the episode, "Let's Start From the Beginning." And start from the beginning they did because they brought on Season 1 contestant, and winner of the original Gristedes challenge, Austin Scarlett, as a guest judge. Not surprisingly, the 16 designers freaked out upon hearing their challenge. I bet you half of them didn't even pay attention to Austin's instructions as they were busy visualizing which aisle they were going to run to. While some of them, including some of my favorites, were a little bit of a let down, others stepped up to the plate and impressed us.

I, like the judges, was disappointed that so many designers used tablecloths. The point of the challenge was to think outside the box, but so many stuck to their comfort zone. Those that did bring innovativeness and were greatly praised were Wesley, who incorporated fly swatters, Joe, who used pasta, Daniel, who made a dress strictly out of plastic cups, and Kelli, who won because of her highly-detailed dress made from vacuum bags, coffee filters, and notebook spirals. Although Blayne, the tan-a-holic, made a foolish outfit that reminded Michael Kors of the wrestling challenge, Jerry's raincoat made out of shower curtains was plain scary. The irony is that he claimed he was the most experienced designer. Naturally, he was auf'd. What are your thoughts from last night's episode?

Biggest Headline of 2008: Rest In Peace, Yves Saint Laurent

It was a sad Sunday. I remember waking to the news of fashion great Yves Saint Laurent passing June 1; throughout the week the fashion world mourned. We put together a tribute slideshow, but that will never do the couturier justice. Looking back on Fab, before June 1, we featured Yves Saint Laurent on a regular basis. Most being new school YSL, under the direction of creative director Stefano Pilati, all being rooted in the man who popularized menswear for women, beatnik, and safari style. Even before then, Yves was thrown into the fire at Christian Dior, upon Dior's death, and kept the house afloat at the ripe age of 21. This man was arguably the first couturier to delve into ready-to-wear. His Rive Gauche stores sold his RTW creations, and he became an international sensation with actress Catherine Deneuve and icon Loulou de la Falaise favoring his clothes. Like many risk-takers, Yves's collections were often pooh-poohed by the press - but ended up setting the trends. Yves retired in 2002.
