Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Band-Aids Are a Sure Sign of Summer

Summer's only a week old, and I've already been through one box of Band-Aids for my kids. While you may think my tots simply love putting the Toy Story bandages on to show off their love of Buzz Lightyear or illicit sympathy for nonexistent boo-boos, they, unfortunately, have all been used for legitimate reasons.

Somehow, as soon as the thermometer passes the 70 degree mark and shorts are pulled out of the closet, my kids find a way to fall, slide, or scrape against every possible surface in sight. I've already found myself picking blacktop out of one banged-up knee, precisely working a splinter out of a tiny finger, and cleaning out an elbow wound that occurred when one tot unnecessarily slid into home base. With three months left of Summer, I'm thinking it may be worth investing in a warehouse club-size box of bandages – it will certainly save me from running to the drugstore every week!

On this week's The Office, we got to see the colleagues of Dunder Mifflin as we rarely see them: in their bathing suits. The gang gets invited to a pool party at Robert California's dream home before he has to put it on the market, and things get a little wild.

Erin bends over backward to make Andy jealous, who has an engagement ring he may or may not use on his girlfriend. Jim tries to leave the party early, but the wet and crazy festivities keep everyone going, and things get weird. There were so many funny lines, but I managed to pick out a few favorites. 8 Ideas to Use Up Your FSA Before the Year-End

Now that it's nearing the end of the year, there are some money chores you need to take care of, such as making sure you've spent the money in your Flexible Spending Account because it will expire before the New Year. You're actually allowed to file an extension if you haven't used up all your FSA dollars, but you need to check your company policy to see if they allow that. Don't fret if you can't extend, here are some last-minute ideas to use your FSA money:

Over-the-counter items: We're not allowed to spend our FSA dollars on over-the-counter medicines without prescriptions but there are plenty of nonmedicinal products that we can still use the FSA money for. For example, band aids, crutches, first aid kits, and rubbing alcohol.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture is covered by your FSA, so if you have a condition such as pain, consider acupuncture.
Chiropractic: Your FSA also covers chiropractic visits, so now may be the time to schedule an appointment with your chiropractor.
Birth control: Contraceptives are covered by the FSA, although some require prescription.
Glasses and contact lens: Schedule a vision exam and use your FSA dollars to buy a new pair of glasses or supplies of contact lenses.
Prescription medicine: Buy prescription medicine if it makes sense for you to do so. Most insurance policies will only let you buy a month's supply at a time, so you can't exactly stock up on medicine.
Doctor's visit: Your FSA will cover the copay so if you're due for a doctor's visit, try to go before the end of the year.
Medical monitoring and testing devices: If you need a gadget to measure and monitor your blood pressure or ovulation, perhaps it's time to buy one now. Pregnancy and glucose test kits also qualify.

FSA is best used when it covers items that your health insurance doesn't generally pay for. Remember to use them or you'll lose them before the year's up!

Soleil Moon Frye Shares Her Tips For Taking a Family "Time Out"

I'm a huge believer in the importance of taking the occasional "time out" as a family and planning an escape to recharge and reconnect.

Last year, Jason surprised me and the kids with an impromptu jaunt to Mexico. Although it was stressful to think of dropping everything on such short notice, the trip turned out to be exactly what we needed. It was an invaluable treat to spend quality time together without the distractions that pull us in a dozen different directions every day.

Whenever I'm traveling with my girls, my carry-on always includes these essentials:

An assortment of portable activities like books, a few toys, and paper and crayons. I have the girls pick out a few of their favorite things from home to take with them - this way we're not overloaded with too much stuff, but they feel connected to what they are bringing.
A first aid kit with Band-Aids and other Doctor Mom must haves in case of emergencies.
Wipes, wipes, and more wipes. They're quick and easy for cleaning up spills and sticky fingers on the go.
A change of clothes for both girls, including a sweatshirt in case they get cold.
A stash of yummy snacks is the best way to combat the inevitable crankiness that comes with restless flights and travel delays.

A successful family trip doesn't require airplanes or lush accommodations. When I was growing up, my mom would delight us by laying blankets on the small balcony of our apartment and letting us sleep under the stars. I've inherited her passion for making an adventure out of everything and am also a big advocate of "staycations." In my house, we love to camp out in the living room and decorate the space to look like an exotic location. You can go all out and cook foods native to those places and do activities inspired by their cultures.

The idea is to carve out time to be together and create a special experience that the kids will always remember. The extravagance of a getaway isn't what will factor into the memories.
