On Our Radar: Scoop Beach Collection to Debut

Scoop NYC has created an exciting collection for ladies who love designer resort collections but would rather not spend a fortune.

Scoop Beach, set to launch in February, will not just be for vacation getaways. "This is not stuff to [simply] go to the beach in," said Stefani Greenfield, co-owner of the store. "We're going to have this in our stores all year long."

Fifteen Scoop NYC shops, as well as other department stores, will carry the collection, which includes a variety of dresses, woven tops, knitwear, pants, scarves, sandals, handbags, and more. If you don't live near a Scoop, an online store is coming soon. Items ranging from $55 to $445 aren't cheap, but they sure beat, say Prada's resort collection. I'll take that.

Sneak Peek! Lauren Conrad Beach Butterfly Collection

The name may be a bit cheesy, but I would say Lauren Conrad's latest collection, Beach Butterfly, is my favorite. That's because it includes the dress that Whitney Port wore during Lauren's show at LA Fashion Week (left). I remember loving it when I saw her and wondering if it was from Lauren's collection. There's no doubt the dress was made for the blonde reality starlet, as it's called the Whit Dress ($155).

There is also an Audri Dress ($180), named after friend and The Hills co-star Audrina Patridge. Audrina's is more expensive than Whitney's. Tisk, tisk! The rest of the collection is not surprisingly similar to the rest of her pieces, but I'll let you be the judge.

Cynthia Rowley Surfs With Roxy

Suddenly, Cynthia Rowley seems that much cooler. An avid surfer, she is teaming up with Roxy for a collection named Cynthia Rowley for Roxy. The first collection will launch exclusively at Barneys New York and at Colette in Paris in March. But don't fret beach dwellers: it will also be available in Roxy stores and in Cynthia Rowley boutiques worldwide. The whole Rowley clan hits breaks: "My family and I surf a lot. Just about every weekend in the Summer, we go to Montauk, and in the winter we go to the Dominican Republic for long weekends. I love that we have this family activity that we all really enjoy.”

Partnering with an outside designer to create an apparel collection is a first for Roxy. But the masterminds behind the lifestyle brand know to keep up with the Jones, “Our mission at Roxy has always been to have one foot in the surf world and another foot in the fashion world,” said Randy Hild, executive vice president of marketing at Roxy. Down to the sandy details! Expect Rowley-inspired wetsuits, boards shorts, shorts, tees, dress, swimwear, and accessories. Neoprene headbands? Right on. And, keeping with the affordable Roxy price point, the collection will be priced from $18 wholesale for a printed scarf to $89 wholesale for a long-sleeve bodysuit. Shaka.

2010 Spring Milan Fashion Week: Prada

For Spring '10, Miuccia Prada concocted a collection inspired by sea and surf. However, it wasn't your typical beach-inspired line. “Beach and antiquity - high and low - it is all the same,” said Miuccia Prada. “It is supposed to be an ironic take - sometimes nostalgic, for a contemporary take on antiquity for those who don’t understand the beauty of the past.” Well said, Miuccia.

Red-lipped models, complete with tousled ponytails, exuded a youthful innocence as they walked down the runway in a variety of crisp shorts - ranging from knicker-inspired, to long and lean, and even a couple of biker shorts - structured jackets, and embellished tops adorned with palm trees, in some darker hues for the print-challenged. But it was really the crystal-laden pieces that stole the show. These shimmering objects, via dresses and shoes, dazzled with every step. Definitely unique, and with a little modifying, like adding a slip underneath the dress, icons such as Ashley Olsen or Diane Kruger would surely take the bait.

On Our Radar: Shoshanna and Charlotte Ronson Make a Splash

High school friends Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss and Charlotte Ronson are taking their friendship to another level. The two designers are coming together to create a beachwear collection named Made With Love. “Charlotte sells my swim line in her store and I always thought it would be cute to do some of her prints on the swim,” said Shoshanna.The duo have designed colorful bikinis and coordinating cover-ups, like the floral printed halter bikini and matching tunic pictured. In addition to selling in Ronson's stores, the pieces will start at $31 wholesale for a bikini bottom to $100 for a towel, and will be found at high-end department stores and boutiques.

Swimming With Shoshanna

Um, isn't Shoshanna hot? And buff? Just had to point that out before we continue swimming with Shoshanna. I don't know about you, but I'll take swimwear advice from a successful designer, mom, and hottie. Here, Shoshanna answers our questions about how revealing a swimsuit should be, what it was like collaborating with Charlotte Ronson on their swim collection, and the best beach coverups.

How revealing should a swimsuit actually be?

Bust coverage test: Three-fourths of the bust should be covered, leaving only a swath of cleavage. The thicker the strap that attaches the bust to the rest of the suit, the more likely it'll stay in place as the day goes on. If you opt for a bandeau top, which is often strapless, nothing should be squeezing out the top or the bottom. Boy shorts offer great coverage on the bottom if you're active, but they're far from being a universally flattering style.

What was your favorite part of collaborating with Charlotte Ronson on Made With Love?

Getting to spend some time together was the best part. We have always played nicely together and get along great. It was very satisfying for both of us to see everything come together and to love everything!

What was the biggest challenge?

Finding time - we are both so busy!

Will this be an ongoing collection?

I know it will be, we have already finished the second collection.

Are you a prints or solids girl?

I'm a print girl. I love all our prints! Once in a while I'll throw on a black bikini, nothing sexier!

How do you cover up on the beach or at the pool?

I'll usually wear a Mexican embroidered tunic, with a cute pair of Anlo denim cutoffs.

And which is preferred - beach or pool?

I'm totally a beach girl! I love the ocean, and beach combing, and of course making sandcastles with my little girl.

What are the best colors for every skin tone?

Navy and black are universally good for every skin tone. Both colors are flattering and look good against the lightest skin tones and the darkest.

How do you take your beach look from day to night?

Find a versatile cover-up that can take your bikini beach look to a casual dinner. A crochet cover with three-quarter sleeves is great because you can throw it over a bikini with cute shorts or jeans and be ready for a night out.

What is the best way to care for swimwear?

Don't put bathing suits in the washing machine, this will weaken the elastic. Instead, wash in cold water with a delicate cleanser such as Woolite.

Behind the Seams: Zimmermann Resort Presentation

I got a little treat trip to NYC this week and you know what that means - take full advantage of the fashion fetes. I attended Australian swim and RTW brand Zimmermann's Resort collection on the roof of the Empire Hotel and it was nothing short of fabulous. Put me next to crazy-fun exotic clothes overlooking the skyline and I'm stoked. I chatted with the sister design duo, Nicky and Simone - Fab cameo! - and was left with a visit to Syndey at the top of my travel queue. And I am convinced Australians do beach better. Just look at the foxy silhouettes and vivid prints. A garden-print bustier top is on my Zimmermann wish list . . . check out the fun!

Swimming With Shoshanna

How many swimsuits do you own?

I own way too many swimsuits to count!!! All Shoshanna, of course!!!

What are the key swim trends to look for this Summer?

Look for bright pop colors like neon pink, orange, and green. Tribal prints are popular as well as ditsy floral prints, big bohemian florals, and graphic black and white.

How do you prevent swimsuit wedgies?

Prevent wedgies by wearing the right size. Not too big and not too small. Should be snug, but not tight.

What advice do you have for a girl who isn’t comfortable with her beach body?

A bathing suit is a bathing suit, it’s never going to cover that much! You can do lots of things to cover up area’s you are insecure about. Throw on an Elizabeth and James button down, Anlo jean shorts, or a Mexican embroidered dress. If you are insecure about your bottom, thrown on a cute skirt. If you want to cover up your arms, a 3/4 sleeve tunic will do just the trick. Also, accessorize your outfit with some beachy jewelry, like gold necklaces or bangles to look super chic.

How do you find a swimsuit that flatters your shape?

Big Busted: Look for halters which offer the most support. Also look for boning and underwire which will act like a bra and securely hold you in place. Curvy: Look for one pieces with ruching to slim your middle. When shopping for bikini's stick to bottoms with tie strings so they are easily adjustable. Flat Chested: Strings are most flattering. If you want to enhance your chest, look for ruffles or ruching which will create the illusion of a bigger chest.

Do you think it’s worth buying an expensive bathing suit (yours) versus a cheap one (H&M)? Does it make a difference?

There are two factors to think about: quality and fit/sizing issues. H&M is very generic and sold as sets. Our collection offers 13 different sizes and are sold as separates so we give customers more options. Shoshanna bathing suits are also constructed with the highest quality materials. We use a special boning and underwire that provides amazing support.

What are some general tips for purchasing swimwear?

Cotton bathing suits are more for show. They will take a long time to dry compared to a polyester/Spandex blend. Accept that sizes will vary, even from the same label.

On Our Radar: Biba's Barbara Hulanicki Takes on Topshop

On April 28, Biba designer Barbara Hulanicki will be taking her aesthetic to the masses with an exclusive capsule collection for Topshop. "They approached me to do a collection that didn't look like Biba," said Hulanicki. "I sent off lots of drawings and prints to Topshop and we waded through them. The result is a split in sartorial personality, or rather clothes for 'good girl and bad girl dressing' with a 'beach party' influence." Did someone say beach party? I'm so there. The collection, which was inspired by Barbara's Miami surroundings, will include beachwear, dresses, and floaty blouses.
