Trend Alert: Wide Legged Jeans!

Wahoo! As I predicted, the skinny jean backlash has begun and wide legged jeans are on the rise. Don't get me wrong - I have warmed up to the skinny silhouette, but I am a 70's girl at heart and love the elongating look of a wide legged pant. Also, I am tall so it makes my legs look super long. But for non-tall gals, it created a long, lean look so really, this is good news for all. With New York Fashion week officially under way, I wonder how many wide legs we're going to see on the runways for Fall 2007. Here is Mandy Moore from this week's Life & Style wearing some fab flares at the Sundance Film Festival.

Critics' Choice Awards Trendspotting: Pastel Pop

While the People's Choice Awards may have been privy to the technicolor invasion, we were flush with bright pastels at tonight's Critics' Choice Awards. Hollywood's leading ladies opted for candy-colored hues, which made for a playfully fun and whimsical red-carpet rundown. Elizabeth Olsen radiated in a sunshine-yellow beaded Pucci minidress and nude peep-toes; Diane Kruger flawlessly executed a bright mixture of grays and canary yellows in a floor-length Prada creation and added a hot-pink clutch as the cherry on top; and Jessica Chastain went soft and pretty with a cotton-candy-pink Balenciaga gown. These bright pastels allow for streamlined accessories, fresh-faced makeup, and, of course, killer shoes; and because of its styling simplicity, we think this is just the beginning of this Spring-inspired color scheme's appeal. Balmain Spring 2012

From the looks of things, Olivier Rousteing knows exactly what Balmain is made of. For Spring 2012, the designer showed us what might happen if a Spanish dancer went west - a mix of long, duster-like leather skirts and denim button-ups paired with the label's signature embellishments on body-conscious minidresses, skirts, and slim pants and jackets. Gold embroidery and fringe on white pants, skirts, and boleros all hinted at beautifully ornate Spanish detailing; while leather pants, denim shirts and skirts, and laser-cut leather brought us back to the Old West. At the core, it's still what Balmain does best - standout, rich metallics, and beading on the slickest and sexiest silhouettes.

Trends: leather, boleros, embellishment, fringe, embroidery, and high-waisted pants.
Colors: black, white, gold, some florals and denim.
Key Piece: the black embellished suit; the gold and white embellished mini and denim shirt.
Accessories: embellished suede and cutout leather booties, gold cuffs, chain bracelets and belts, oversize gold belt buckles.

Thierry Mugler, under the direction of Nicola Formichetti, presented a sculpted, tight, and provocative collection for Spring 2012. It's impossible to look at the collection and not wonder what Lady Gaga will be wearing - the nude and tan minidresses, a cutout white jumpsuit, or the gothic black uniforms? While much of the collection is intended for more daring fashionistas, there was a very cool pair of glittery leggings paired with an asymmetric tunic that could make its way to a red carpet outing near you.

Trends: sculptural cuts, cutouts, bandage dressing, short hemlines, asymmetry.
Colors: black, white, gold, nude, tan.
Key Look: the gold beaded leggings and tunic.
Accessories: minimal platform sandals.
Who Would Wear It: Aside from Lady Gaga? These are showstopping looks meant for music videos - think Rihanna and a non-pregnant Beyoncé.

Just Cavalli Spring 2012

The sexy, slightly boho, total glamour of Roberto Cavalli's younger line was on full display for Spring 2012. There were flirty minidresses, slim beaded jackets paired with chiffon blouses, skinny, ultra low-rise pants with exaggerated leather stitching, and billowing chiffon printed gowns. We loved the slim, tailored silhouette of the denim, making it a chic evening option when elevated with the appropriate textures - lamé, ornate beading, chiffon. Like Olivier Theyskens did with Theory, Cavalli executed here: making urban everyday wear just a bit more dressed up.

Trends: beading, fringe, the dressy jacket, chiffon gowns.
Colors: Peach, gold, baby blue, yellow.
Key Look: A peach and gold pants/jacket combo, the baby blue beaded jacket.
Who Would Wear It: Girls who love effortless day-to-night transition wear with some glam thrown in: think Rihanna or Kate Moss.

Moschino Cheap & Chic Spring 2012

Rossella Jardini always brings out the fun in Fashion Week with her Moschino Cheap & Chic line, and her latest Spring collection didn't disappoint. The lucky ones who got to attend the show were treated with fresh fruits and vegetables free for the taking on farmers market-style tables, which, of course, set the theme for the collection. Apple, grape, carrot, onion, and pepper prints all made its way on the runway via maxi dresses, car coats, and tiered skirts. For the strawberry lover, Jardini created a pink dress adorned with black, seed-like beads and a green bow. So cute. Since no farmers market is complete without flowers, Jardini completed the theme with an array of floral print shifts and notable pouf-skirt minidresses decorated with pretty watercolor prints. If this doesn't make you want to gobble up your fruits and veggies, we don't know what will.

Trends: Pouf-skirt minidresses, fruit prints, shift dresses, tiered skirts.
Colors: Yellow, green, white green, black, seafoam green.
Key Look: The strawberry dress and pouf-skirt minidresses were adorable.
