Before we dive into what to buy, there are a few important things to remember about consuming these foods:

Eating foods fresh and in their natural state, especially fruits and vegetables (rather than in pill or powder supplement form), usually allows us to absorb the greatest amount of their nutrients. The way a superfood is processed or cooked can significantly lower its antioxidant content.
If the superfood can’t be eaten fresh, look for easy and appetizing recipes containing it. No matter how “super” a superfood may be, if you don’t know how to cook it, you’ll probably let it go to waste.

Darjeeling Tea: Elegant and Elusive

January's National Tea Month, and we're celebrating with a look at some of the world's most notable teas. If you're anything like me and don't know much about Darjeeling tea, you might find yourself overwhelmed by some of the complex terms. A little further investigation, however, and it all starts to make more sense.

Darjeeling tea is a black tea from the Darjeeling region in West Bengal, India. All tea labeled Darjeeling must be made in this hilly district, similar to how champagne needs to come from the Champagne region of France. Leaves are harvested from the same plant as green, white, black, and oolong tea. While Darjeeling tea is marketed as black tea, its incomplete oxidation process makes it actually closer to oolong tea.

Varieties of Darjeeling tea actually depend on what time of year the leaves are harvested. For example, tea plucked during the Summer is much stronger flavored than that plucked during early Spring. The flavor profile ranges from fresh, bright flavors to spicy and tannic. The colors of resulting tea even changes, depending on the plucking season. Darjeeling is available in four forms: whole leaf, broken leaf, fannings (which are smaller pieces than broken leaf), and dust.

When brewing Darjeeling tea, you should take one level tablespoon of pure Darjeeling and put it into a teacup. Bring water to a vigorous boil and pour into the cup. Brew the tea for three to four minutes and enjoy.

Celebrity chefs have made olive oil a $720 million business in the U.S., but a new book is blowing the lid off an industry that might be built in part on the backs of crooks.

That's the argument Tom Mueller makes in Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil.

“I was sitting in a dark bar with an undercover cop in Italy, and he was telling me about deals being cut with high-level politicians and millions of dollars in EU subsidies being misappropriated,” Mueller told the New York Post. “He was speaking in this hushed tone, and I had to laugh, because this was not black-market plutonium or drugs, this was olive oil.”

Mueller contends that because true olive oil is so pricey to produce, some companies have taken to doctoring bottles with chemicals and disguising cheaper oils with added flavoring.

Then they slap on fancy labels with buzzwords like "Made in Italy" and "Cold-pressed" and ship them to stores without any rigorous quality control from the FDA, he says.

It wouldn't be that big of a deal, except the knockoffs offer far fewer of the health benefits that made olive oil such a cash cow to begin with.
