The Look For Less: Abaeté Bowie Black and White Dress

For the longest time, I've wanted an Abaeté dress for when I'm in one of my mod moods. So why, you may ask, don't I have one sitting in my closet as we virtually speak? Because I've never wanted to pay almost $300 for one of these Abaeté Bowie Dresses, $264. Lucky for me, and my fellow mod lovers, there's a cheaper solution!

Once again, Forever 21 pulls through when I'm looking for a cheaper version of an overpriced dress. This Forever 21 Two Tone Dress, $23, is pretty dead on, except that the colors are inversed. It is classically mod and screams "Abaeté!" I think I'll run over to Forever 21 after work today!

2011 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten stayed true to his decadent eclecticism for Fall 2011, supplying us with a full-throttle experience filled with tweedy textures, snakeskin swirled skirts, shimmery knits, and a heavy helping of outstanding collage-effect prints. Sounds busy at first read, but look closely and you will soon become entranced with the designer's genius story. The inspiration, which Van Noten cites as David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust and Ballets Russes founder Sergei Diaghilev, came together to form a mixture of marbled tweed jackets, tuxedo striped trousers, fur-lined coats, and a bevy of multicolored patterns made into knee-length skirts and blouses. There was an eye-catching button-up work shirt - one of our favorite pieces - smartly remixed with a bold silk print trailing down one arm and across the back. And then the dresses appeared: languid, loose, and seductive, cut almost like a loose tee up top and sliced all the way up to the thigh on down below.

Trends: Collage prints, tuxedo trousers, metallic tweed.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren

Inspired by the smoky mystery of the Far East, Ralph Lauren gave us a little Shanghai surprise this morning. With a soft version of David Bowie's "China Girl" playing in the background, models emerged in mostly black, often lustrous ensembles accessorized with jade earrings and red lacquered heels. The silhouettes remained classic - halter dresses, tuxedos, shawl coats - but he achieved a dramatic, sexy mood via rich satiny fabrics and sparkling details. There was ornate beading on dresses, including a black dress that shone from being covered entirely in black beads, wrap dresses done in a luxurious garnet-hued panné velvet, and a double-breasted suit in shantung silk that inspired visions of Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express. Ralph had his menswear moment as well, showing pinstripe trousers with a jade green silk top and sharply tailored tuxedos.
