Former Cacharel Designers Work on a Budget

While many dread budget restraints, former Cacharel designer Ignacio Ribeiro welcomes it. "Cutting budgets back is so exciting," he said, referring to the relaunch of him and his wife, Suzanna Clement's label, Clement Ribeiro. The duo put their company into voluntary liquidation in 2005 and left Cacharel in 2007. "It’s been a big, fun game for us, finding ways to be better, stronger - and more competitive but on a smaller scale," Ribeiro said.

Whereas before their collection was all about intarsia, now knitwear will be combined with wovens. The pair currently works from home in North London and is aiming to reduce prices 20 percent for Spring 2010.

In the works is a bold and bright capsule collection - to be unveiled during couture week in Paris in July - of limited-edition ready-to-wear and accessories made from vintage couture fabrics. Also in the pipeline is an upgraded website featuring a series of 30-second films which will make the collections come to life. Welcome back.

On Our Radar: Cacharel Reinvents Itself

In a time when originality is of utmost importance, French contemporary sportswear brand Cacharel has announced that it's redefining itself. "There will no longer be a ‘Cacharel by . . .’ There’s one star: Cacharel," said Marc Ramanantsoa, the firm’s new managing director. The brand is specifically changing its design studio, management, distribution, and production. In terms of its new fashion direction, the house gave a preview of what's to come at its Rue d’Uzès boutique in Paris (see below).
It remains to be seen if these tweaks will be well received, but according to Ramanantsoa, change is necessary: "We need to come back to the product and convince them that there is a change. We want to see the street dressed in Cacharel."

Culottes

Women's flared, shortened pant, made to look like a skirt. They differ from trousers or shorts by being much fuller at the bottom (hem) than at the waist. They're unlike a skort, which is shorts that have a front covering to resemble a skirt.

Fab Flash: Eley Kishimoto to Helm Cacharel

London-based Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto have been tapped as the new designers for Cacharel. The couple has collaborated on the Eley Kishimoto line, well-known for its colorful graphic prints, since the mid-90s. In the past, they have contributed their talent for print designs and fabric development to Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton.

After Eley and Kishimoto move to Paris, their first collection for the French contemporary sportswear line, which was founded in 1962 and is also known for its print-driven pieces, will be for Fall 2008. Looking forward to it!

Liberty

A feminine print of small garden-party florals. First popularized by London's Liberty & Co. department store. Often gives off a sweet, country vibe. Can be found on dresses, skirts, scarves, and even lingerie. The print is so popular, it made its way onto Nike sneakers. The Spring catwalks - specifically Marc by Marc Jacobs (left) and Cacharel - were filled with liberty prints.

Fab Flash: Vera Wang and Fellow Designers Announce Fashion Week Changes

You know something is awry when Vera Wang pulls out of showing her collection at Bryant Park in February.

“I finally made the decision last night based on many, many things. The intimacy of a smaller show feels much more appropriate for these times. I say that as a business owner, as a designer and as a person,” said Wang. Instead, the designer plans on creating a more personal setting by showing her offerings at her new Mercer street boutique in NYC.

Sources also revealed that Betsey Johnson has also pulled the plug on Fashion Week at Bryant Park. In addition, Cacharel announced that it will not show at Paris Fashion Week. Stay tuned for more Fashion Week updates . . .

Designer Spotlight: Eley Kishimoto

Since Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto, the London designers behind Eley Kishimoto, were recently named the new creative directors for Cacharel, I thought I would give you a better introduction to their style.

Known in some circles as the patron saints of print, Eley Kishimoto has been credited with influencing the resurgence of patterns on the international design scene. They partnered in the 1992 directly after graduating from Central Saint Martins design school, starting in womenswear but eventually expanding into bags, jewelery, sunglasses, and even home accessories.

Bold graphic prints combined with bright colors have always been their forte, brokering collaborations with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen. I've always been a fan of their lighthearted designs, and I'm really excited to see what they have in mind for Cacharel!

Eley Kishimoto is available at Creatures of Comfort and runs $19-$850.

Shoe Designer Spotlight: Jonathan Kelsey

Move over Christian Louboutin - there's a new shoe man in town, and he's serving up sexy and intelligent footwear. I'm not implying that Loub needs to move out, but his new neighbor, Jonathan Kelsey, is posing a serious threat. Jonathan honed his skills at Jimmy Choo, Cacharel, and Giles Deacon, so his posh designs should come as no surprise. His current collection, available at Saks Fifth Avenue, is a nod to the mid-'70s collection in his mother's closet. Cute! Prices range from $550 to $975. Pricey, yes, but so hard to say no.
