Fab Flash: Urban Outfitters Looks To the Future

Before you know it, you could be shopping from your cell phone! Or that's the idea Urban Outfitters has in mind, at least.

Last week the company launched a text-messaging program that could be the first step towards mobile e-commerce. The program, called OU TXT, is only a test at this point in time, but it provides the company with insight into how shoppers could potentially interact via their cell phones. Those who sign up for the UO TXT program in stores or online will receive early notice on sales, alerts for special in-store events like concerts, and access to exclusive offers. No more than two messages will be sent to the shopper's cell phone per month.

Can you imagine? Shopping from your cell phone - crazy!

On Our Radar: Roberto Cavalli Gets His Own Credit Card

Is there anything Roberto Cavalli doesn't do these days? Besides putting his name on a cell phone, vodka, Coke bottles, and nightclubs, the designer has now designed a credit card. A MasterCard to be exact. The "Cavalli Card," available March 1, has iridescent colors similar to his yacht. It also has his iconic snakeskin print and his name in shiny gold. If you want to show off your credit card in style, visit www.robertocavallicard.com or a Roberto Cavalli boutique starting in March to get an application form. Oh, and look for a star-studded launch event during Milan Fashion Week in March.

As you can see from her resort look, life's a beach for Katherine Heigl. The actress was vacationing with her hubby in Mexico and naturally summoned her sunglass collection. One of the pairs she sported were the Armani Exchange Large Round Sunglasses ($70). I know what you're thinking: She's on a lavish vacation but her sunnies cost less than your cell phone bill? That's the beauty of the high and low lifestyle and I'm glad Katherine is living it.

Our beloved Nina Garcia can add cell phone spokesperson to her laundry list of career accomplishments. Seriously, what doesn't this woman do? She's the fashion director at ELLE, she's a judge on Project Runway, she written a style guide, heck she's even answered our Fab questions. Last night she attended the Blackberry Pearl Smartphone launch.
The phone is a pink version of the Blackberry Pearl, and it's one that Nina Garcia is very passionate about. She says she never goes without her Blackberry, especially during photoshoots and the ever-so-stressful fashion week. Like Nina, there are definitely two things I bring to fashion week with me: my fabulous wardrobe and my Blackberry.

We've bedazzled cell phones, iPods, Bluetooth headsets . . . and now the latest item being blinged out is the earplug. The Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) has launched a competition to find an earplug that's socially acceptable.

"Because of Bluetooth headsets and iPods, people are getting more used to the idea of putting things in their ears that are fashionable," said a spokeswoman. Designer earplugs may cost you a bit more ($20-$30), but it may be worth it for those who go clubbing often. Would you consider investing in designer earplugs or would you rather succumb to hearing damage?

A new era is upon us: the age of luxury brands extending every which way. Prada is the purveyor of cell phones, Armani has signed a deal to do LCD TVs, and Roberto Cavalli is doing...vodka?! Well-established companies are always looking for more ways to increase their revenue, but the question is: are these things really going to catch on?

The same phenomenon occurred in the late 80s, when French designer Pierre Cardin and American designer Halston both licensed their names to be used on so many products that they killed their luxury brand status.

Luxury brands today are supposedly more careful about the quality and quantity of their products, but no one is more singularly successful than Ralph Lauren, who sells everything from linens, candles, and beds to cashmere dog clothes. Trying to emulate Mr. Lauren could be dangerous though: the current economic climate predicts a marked decrease in consumer spending. If things go as expected, what will Mr. Cavalli do with all that vodka? PartySugar: are you reading this?
