Jeff Andrews Calls It Mellow Yellow

In the premiere issue of the new Traditional Home/Lonny digital magazine hybrid Trad Home, one of the 20 designers heralded for ushering in a "new trad" design style is one of my personal favorites: Jeff Andrews. Trad Home gives us a peek at a cozy living room Andrews designed for a client with a young family. There are plenty of elements to swoon over, like velvet upholstery, a plush shag rug, and a foursome of starburst mirrors, but what I'm truly coveting is the mellow yellow color palette!

A mix of chartreuse textiles, gilded furniture and accessories, and layers of dark greens paired with two shades of green paint come together perfectly to create a dimensional, engaging, and relaxed space. The surest way to replicate this look is to pick up some groovy green paint swatches and then head straight to the fabric shop to have your furniture upholstered. Before and After: A Thrift Shop Stool

This little stool was unearthed at a Jacksonville, FL thrift store and purchased for under $5. As you can see, its upholstery was not only in terrible shape, but quite dated, and the stool's wood frame was also badly damaged. It was simply begging for a little paint, fabric, and a DIY weekend! Love It or Hate It? Chartreuse Tufted Headboard

Chartreuse is one of those colors that people have a hard time feeling neutral about. This Chartreuse Tufted Headboard ($1,709) is built on a maple frame that's been covered in tufted, chartreuse suede. Part of me loves it, but I doubt that I could handle the color - or decorating around the color - for very long. What about you?

Happy Hour: The Last Word

On Monday night I headed over to my favorite bar, 15 Romolo, to be a guest judge for a Gong-Show Karaoke competition. The event was sponsored by Chartreuse, an aromatic French liquor with a vibrant green color. It just so happens that my current favorite cocktail - The Last Word - uses Chartreuse. I ordered one and asked my bartending buddy, Aaron how to make it.

The Last Word is a classic concoction that dates back to prohibition. It's an expertly created cocktail with four simple ingredients that mix perfectly. The Last Word is not sweet or bitter, but wonderfully balanced and smooth. Don't be intimidated by the gin, because the portions are equal, you won't even know it's there! Inspired: Kate Hudson at Beverly Hills Burberry Opening

On Monday, Kate Hudson arrived at the grand re-opening of the Burberry Beverly Hills store looking as gorgeous as ever. But we all know Kate looks fab even when she's not all dolled up for an A-List event. What struck me about this photo wasn't Hudson's attire — the boxy Burberry dress isn't the most flattering — but the palette is awe-inspiring. I adore the chartreuse shade of this silk dress mixed with the black and gray floor decorations and the beige walls. It instantly triggered the thought of one of my favorite crave worthy items, the Rug Company Durbar Hall Rug ($1,795- 25,920). I thought I'd design a bedroom around it, the focal point being a chartreuse tufted headboard. I created two sitting areas, and then added bedroom essentials like a dresser and a bookcase. Chartreuse

A half green, half yellow color; it is precisely halfway between green and yellow, so it is 50% green and 50% yellow. It was named because of its resemblance to the green color of one of the French liqueurs called green chartreuse.

DKNY's Fall 2007 collection had an eye-catching satin chartreuse dress (left), which is fun for the holidays.

Organize Your Shelves With Quirky Bookends!

Now that we're getting closer to the New Year, I'm already starting to think of stylish ways to re-organize clutter prone areas in my home. Some recent book swapping has inspired me to think about different ways to accessorize my shelves. These bookends would add order and an unexpected style statement to my literary collection.

These Whale Bookends ($150, top, left) would introduce a touch of mod whimsy to nautical decor – perfect for holding a first edition of Moby Dick.

Although I'm not sure I'd have the heart to fill these DCI Decorative Jar Half Bookends ($70, top, right) with goldfish, I wouldn't think twice about filling them with fresh cut flowers for a pop of color.

I'm sure these Mid Century Jax Bookends by Curry (center) are out of my price range, but I love how they pay homage to childhood memories and pop art history. The shocking chartreuse color isn't bad either.
