NFL Cheerleaders Accused of Jinxing Their Teams

Is it any coincidence that successful NFL teams like the Bears, Browns, Giants, Lions, Packers, and Steelers don't have cheerleaders? The Wall Street Journal doesn't think so. Today, an article pointed out that these six teams, which have won four Super Bowls in the past six years and made up half of the teams playing in the big game, have something in common besides winning and cold Winters: no cheerleaders. Could the dancing, half-naked women be cursed? Not likely. But considering how superstitious athletes can be, professional cheerleaders might soon start worrying about their job security. In the meantime, let's take a look at the teams who do have squads and see how they brought some holiday cheer to the sidelines this year.

We can always count on Alexander McQueen to do the unexpected. With his diffusion line McQ's Spring ad campaign, McQueen definitely threw me for a loop . . . so much that I had to share. Rather than depicting the clothes in his collection, the photos focus on a group of all-American cheerleaders, right down to the colors of their uniforms. Supposedly, the collection has sport-based silhouettes, hence the connection; are you buying it?

Madonna Rocks the Super Bowl Halftime Show With a Little Help From Her Friends

Madonna blew the roof off of the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis on Sunday. The Giants defeated the Patriots to take home the championship, but Madonna was another winner of the evening. She performed some of her biggest hits like "Vogue" and "Like a Prayer," as well as her new single "Give Me All Your Luvin." Nicki Minaj and MIA joined her for that cheerleader-inspired jam, though MIA managed to cause a bit of controversy when she seemed to give the middle finger to the camera. Madonna also sang alongside the guys of LMFAO and Cee Lo Green. Madonna's impressive spectacle ended with a light show and inspirational message of "World Peace" for the audience in the stadium and watching around the country. In case you hadn't heard, Madonna will be taking the stage on Sunday to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. We're keeping our fingers crossed for one or two vintage songs (a medley perhaps?), but there's one thing you can count on: she'll be showing off her latest single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'." The new video for the song is essentially an ad for the biggest day in football: we've got linebackers surrounding the Queen of Pop, while M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj act as cheerleaders. Jamie Lynn Spears Shares Lessons on Birth Control and Teen Pregnancy

“I believe in safety and birth control as prevention," Jamie Lynn Spears tells Glamour this month. "But like many young girls . . . I was really scared to go to the doctor." Britney's little sister had to grow up fast, after she became pregnant at 16, and after taking some time away from the spotlight, she gave an interview with Glamour to mark her 21st birthday.

In the interview, Jamie Lynn shares the reality of becoming pregnant at an age most girls are thinking about prom, cheerleading, or college. She admits, "I had been on a Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, and after we wrapped shooting, I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that." But that wouldn't happen. "Then I found out I was pregnant [by then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge]. I was 16. I’d had one boyfriend."

Jamie Lynn also says she resented the judgment, which she believes was intensified by her fame. "I was judged for something that probably most everyone does. I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision." But fear of judgement also led to the accidental pregnancy. Jamie Lynn explained, "I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn’t want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl."

Jamie Lynn's honesty reveals that many sexually active teens need the adults in their lives, be it parents, doctors, or sex ed teachers, to be more proactive about getting them access to birth control. Cheerleading Leads to Serious Injury

If you've seen Bring It On, then you know cheerleading is serious business. Gymnastic moves and daring lifts are just as important, if not more so, than the symbolic pom-poms. When it comes to serious injuries, cheering is number one and those feats of daring are to blame.

Cheerleading, at both the high school and college levels, was found to cause the majority of catastrophic injuries in a comparison of all sports-related injuries. The study, conducted by National Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH, explains that catastrophic injuries usually involve spinal cord damage, which is indeed serious business.

According to a report released last year by the National Center For Catastrophic Sports Injury Research, injuries sustained by high school cheerleaders in the last 25 years account for just over 65 percent of all catastrophic sports injuries sustained by female high school athletes, and the statistics for college cheerleaders are just as high. This makes women's rugby not seem so rough.

We are so excited that Young Adult hits theaters today! Charlize Theron plays Mavis, a girl who used to rule the school and is now dealing with some deep-rooted issues. She heads back to her sleepy Minnesota hometown to live out a sick twisted fantasy that she and her high school boyfriend are destined to be together. Doesn't sound too sick or twisted yet, right? The only problem is he's happily married with a sweet wife and newborn baby girl who Mavis refers to as "it." The movie makes you laugh and cringe in a way that only Diablo Cody could pen. But the icing on the cake? A constant influx of '90s references. If you're a girl who grew up in the '90s, here are five reasons you've got to see Young Adult.

Waverly Prep reminds us of the girlie books we grew up with. Whether you were a lover of Sweet Valley High or Judy Blume, the Waverly Prep teen-fiction series that Charlize Theron's character writes will make you want to pull out those old books and dive back head first.
The jocks still dated the cheerleaders. Buddy and Mavis were the picture-perfect high school couple of the '90s. Too bad Buddy has moved on and Mavis is stuck in the past.
We enter an epic 1990s girlie bedroom. When we enter Mavis's untouched high school bedroom, there are enough colorful scrunchies and high school Glamour Shots to satisfy any '90s girl craving for nostalgia.
There is talk of the lost art of mixtapes. From the opening credits of the film, a yellow mixtape with the song "The Concept" by Teenage Fanclub plays a remarkably central role in the novel and Mavis's twisted vision of her lost love. While modern playlists are pretty awesome, I'd like to start a movement to bring the mixtape back.
Diablo Cody went to high school in 1995! This girl lived out all the 1990s high school magic first hand. If we have to go back to high school, we're glad Diablo Cody is the writer to take us there.
