Forever 21 Goes Contemporary

Forever 21 keeps churning out those collections. First it launched plus-size line Faith 21, and now it's on to Love 21, its first-ever contemporary collection. This means we'll be seeing a more sophisticated side of the fast fashion retailer. Don't worry, prices will remain affordable. Mark your calendars for May 19, when the line drops at select stores and online.

On Our Radar: Bringing Contemporary Wear to Hollywould!

With the current boom in contemporary wear, Hollywould has decided to ride the wave.

Come Spring, the brand best known for its hot shoes is launching a 75-piece collection of silk jersey dresses, printed gowns, cotton and jersey T-shirts, jackets, and denim, set to retail at the likes of Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf, and Harvey Nichols.

Eventually, the collection will include everything from lingerie and eyewear to swimwear and even perfume. Sounds like a star in the making!

Fab Flash: Another New Clothing Line for MK and Ashley!

Good news for all of you Mary-Kate and Ashley fashion fans! Now that they have the luxury market covered with The Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley have announced the launch of a new contemporary sportswear line, Elizabeth and James, coming out this Fall.

The line is named after their siblings and will include blazers, washed leather jackets, military-inspired tops, shrunken tees, oversize tees, pencil skirts, cashmere sweaters, fur jackets, and cashmere coats, all playing with a masculine/feminine theme. There will also be silk dresses and a sequined minidress inspired by one of Mary-Kate's vintage finds. The collection will be sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Intermix, with a price range of $40-$452 - making it slightly more affordable than The Row. Exciting!

You may have heard of edgy clothing line MK2K - it's a celebrity favorite. Judging from its unique pieces (I love that cutout blazer, center) it's easy to see why so many swear by Michelle Kim's designs.It all started when Kim couldn't find a sweater that was functional, stylish, and inexpensive. So in August 2006, MK2K started offering contemporary knits that retail for under $200. The Fall/Winter collection is made up of all things cozy - knit wraps, vest sweaters, and wool dresses. It's effortless without losing panache.

Nicole Richie Designs New Contemporary Line!

Nicole Richie is a new mom again, but that's not stopping her from expanding her fashion empire. Along with House of Harlow 1960 and a maternity line for A Pea in the Pod, she is designing a women's contemporary line called Winter Kate (Harlow's middle names). The 37-piece collection, which was inspired by peacocks and other birds, includes tops, vests, bed jackets, and dresses - mini, long slip-style, and kimono-sleeve maxis.

"Fashion should be accessible. That was my philosophy when designing House of Harlow 1960 and it remains my philosophy for Winter Kate," she said. Prices start at $35 and go up to $598 for leather pieces. Look out for the line in February at stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Intermix, and Kitson.

Stars Party Pretty For BCBG's 20th Birthday

In celebration of BCBG's 20th anniversary, the brand's biggest fans attended the Whitney Contemporaries art and auction party in NYC. Models and actresses alike posed and partied the night away in designer Max Azria's stunning frocks. Some opted for his Herve Leger line, while others went straight for Max Azria. Camilla Belle was one of the best dressed in this beautiful green one-shoulder ruffle Max Azria dress. Hilary Rhoda, Ali Larter, Alexis Bledel, and many others turned out as well. Come on in party people.

On Our Radar: Murakami-Vuitton Blend Lines Between Culture and Commerce

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles currently houses a Murakami exhibition featuring more than 90 works by the artist, Takashi Murakami. Art exhibitions are nothing new at MOCA, but what is novel in this case is a Murakami-Louis Vuitton luxury store amid the exhibition. Translation: museum goers can and have purchased Vuitton-Murakami handbags while checking out art.

While some argue that this first-ever boutique-cum-exhibition erodes the line between culture and commerce, others, like designer Marc Jacobs, see it in a more positive light. Richard Chai's Cheap(er) Love

Richard Chai is no stranger to designing on the cheap. ICYMI, he created a flirty limited-edition collection for Target Go International back in August '08. This time, the creator is kicking it up a notch with a lower-priced contemporary line for guys and gals, dubbed Richard Chai – Love. "It’s inspired by my girl, who’s in love with the guy that I dress," said Chai. "They’re not carbon copies of each other, but they go hand in hand." Aww, sweet.

The 40-piece tomboyish luxe line, wholesaling from $50 to $425, doesn't launch until Spring '10, but lucky Fashion Week goers can preview the new collection at Chai’s runway show on Sept. 12 - you know I'll be there.
