Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2012

True to form, Gaultier delivered trench coats, sharp suiting, and far sexier fare for Spring 2012. The collection showcased his signature craft in structured, pinstriped suits, then gave way to a sultrier side as models hit the runway with perfectly '40-inspired victory curls - and their look numbers in hand. Evening wear in elegant body-conscious jersey dresses, some draped, some with waist-defining corsets, and still, others with embroidered tops, and leg-baring slits brought femininity in the most mature sense. The statement is somewhat dramatic, especially when you consider Gaultier's tattooed body stockings and piercings, but the dressing is easy and subtly seductive.

Scarlett Johansson Goes From Day to Night With Dolce & Gabbana

Milan fashion week got a boost of Hollywood star power when Scarlett Johansson watched Dolce & Gabbana Spring show yesterday. Scarlett, who is the face of Dolce & Gabbana's cosmetics collection, arrived in a beautiful lace gown and later changed into a black corseted cocktail dress for dinner at Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's namesake Italian restaurant. The trip overseas may come as a welcome break from Scarlett's naked picture phone hacking drama back in the states as well as the latest rumor of romance with Justin Timberlake. Even so, Scarlett is at the top of her game professionally. Production on The Avengers just wrapped, and we recently got the first look at We Bought a Zoo, out Dec. 23, in which she stars opposite the ever-endearing Matt Damon.

Versace Spring 2012

While most designers went tribal for Spring '12, Donatella Versace ventured under the sea. It was a leg-bearing collection as models sauntered down the runway - complete with big blowouts and dangerously high lucite heels - in an array of starfish, seashell, and seahorse printed short sets and minidresses. Sexy indeed, and when skin wasn't showing down below, Versace paired fitted pencil skirts with belly-baring bandeau and corset tops. Pastel hues dominated the collection, but black did make an appearance in the way of cocktail-ready dresses. The rest of the eveningwear portion provided red carpet attire options with studded one-shoulder dresses and high-slit maxi-length gowns. The bottom line? Get ready to hit the gym for Spring. Vera Wang Spring 2012

With an eclectic front-row crowd that included Kim Kardashian, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Serena Williams, and a dramatic last-minute arrival by Beyoncé, the Vera Wang Spring 2012 show already had a buzz going by the time the first ethereal white look strode down the runway. It was a collection inspired by Alice in Wonderland - Tim Burton's version, no doubt - that mixed Vera's skill for soft feminine touches with an edge; chiffon dresses had drawstrings, floral prints seemed to morph into something totally trippy and neon-hued, and the skirts were cut away to reveal the models' long legs clad in gladiator heels. Some of the more fanciful looks included a yellow corset with peplum boy shorts and techno cotton eyelet cropped vests layered over corsets. We remain most entranced, however, by the first series of white looks, as the play between transparency and tailoring, between softness and edge, seemed most natural and truly channeled that Alice in Wonderland magic. This can be no coincidence considering Wang's reign as one of the world's top bridal designers.

Trends: Sporty, sheer dresses, boy shorts, hooded vests.

Colors: White, psychedelic prints, gray, indigo, purple.

Key Look: The first series of white dresses that had Vogue Editor Grace Coddington pointing and whispering rather excitedly from the front row.

Who Would Wear It: We could see Beyoncé using one of the corset/vest combos for a music video; red-carpet risk takers like Tilda Swinton would look amazing in the white chiffon dresses.

Betsey Johnson Spring 2012

A frenzy of photogs snapping Nicki Minaj's front row arrival set the tone for Betsey Johnson's energy-filled (and very sexy) Spring 2012 collection - one that ended with the Betsey cartwheeling down the runway, and began with Johnson's daughter Lulu opening the show in a body-con white knit dress. Inspired by Brigitte Bardot and the burlesque dancers of the '40s, the designer delivered her signature dose of the vintage-inspired with sultry, corseted silhouettes and sheer boudoir-inspired cover-ups, then played to the tough girl with leather details, and stud- and sequin-adorned dresses. It's part pinup with high-waisted shorts and crop tops in a blast of hot pink and black, while Betsey plants a few surprises for the edgier girl: printed asymmetrical t-shirt dresses, skulls, and studs added to miniskirts and bodysuits.

Trends: Lace, leather, florals, leopard print, lingerie-inspired.

Colors: Hot pink, black, white.

Key Look: High-waist leopard-print pants and sheer black bustier and cardigan.

Rachel Comey Spring 2012

With a live drum-heavy performance from New York indie band I.U.D. playing in the backdrop, Rachel Comey showed her Spring 2012 collection last night at Pier 59 Studios. Comey's trademark cool-cum-whimsical prints were updated with a chic new twist, "I'm taking them to a more subtle, textural level," said Comey. "And I like it." Adding depth to her collection were draped asymmetric floral print dresses layered over corsets and diaphanous sheer cable knit print patterns. For accessories, Comey showed off another covetable range of flatform sandals, colorblocked loafers, and Moroccan flats topped off with straw hats. When we spotted Jena Malone out this weekend, we thought to ourselves, this is how you wear a midi skirt. The actress's spot on combination of a fitted, almost corset style top, midi skirt, and platforms is practically a no-fail formula for how to wear one of this season's hottest hemlines - the midi skirt. This is why it works:

The fitted bodice style top flatters your frame and defines your waist, while the full calf-length skirt floats away from the body and balances your top half.
It mimics natural feminine curves, and on a boyish frame helps to define and create those curves where the structured top meets the defined waistline of the skirt. You don't want to add bulk to your top half with a billowy blouse or one that covers your waist.
The length is generally an easy one to pull off, exposing the thinnest part of the leg. Adding a platform or wedge helps to elongate your legs and make you appear taller, which is key to executing this style. Especially if you're on the shorter side you'll want to avoid pairing the midi skirt with flats.
