The Crop Top Trend: Will You Wear It?

We loved the retro '50s feel of the crop top when it appeared in Rachel Comey's Spring 2011 runway show, and we've since seen it popping up on celebs. Kelly Rowland chose a yellow lace version, while Zoe Kravitz went for a white top and black skirt at a party in New York. We even did a story on how to wear a crop top. That said, it definitely shows some skin. Is it a trend you'll be wearing this Summer?

When it's hot and heady outside, I gravitate toward clothes with natural ventilation. This flirty Miss Ferriday Cropped Lace Top ($107) immediately struck a fashion chord. The shorter cut is ideal for sweltering days, and I love the femme ruffle hem. I would pair it with a cute bandeau bra and shorties for a sweltering day in the city. However, I can't bear paying that much for such a small amount of fabric. There must be a cheaper option out there!

Hands down, Saved by the Bell was my favorite after-school show. High school couldn't look cooler with Kelly Kapowski, Lisa Turtle, and Jessie Spano. Of course, hotties Zach Morris (remember the huge cellphone he used to carry in his pocket?) and beefcake A.C. Slater provided hunky eye candy. And Screech, who could forget Screech? Loved him. I was only in grade school when this show debuted, so I could only dream of wearing Kelly's crop tops and Lisa's tight denim shorts - Jessie had legs for days in those washed out skinny jeans. The girls also fancied jean jackets, high-waist pants, and floral prints. Sigh, what I would do for a Freaky Friday experience with Kelly Kapowski circa '91 . . .

Trend Alert: Crop Tops

It was bound to happen. Crop tops are back in a badass way. If you're brave enough to show some skin, jump on the bandwagon. Don't fret, there's no need to go all-out '80s like Whitney Port. I suggest contrasting this short shirt with something more sophisticated like a pair of cropped black trousers or cute skirt. Even better, try layering it over a tank a la Sienna Miller. You down?

Celebrity Style: Lindsay Lohan

On Fridays, I like to shake Celebrity Style up. Why not? I realize Lindsay's look at the opening of the Apple Lounge may be hit or miss, but I consider tasteful risk taking a hit. Her emerald green 3.1 Phillip Lim crop top complements her strawberry blond hair (which looks really good, btw), and she knows a pair of Yves Saint Laurent platform pumps will give her jean-short-wearing legs the proper boost. She created a mix of rough and delicate jewelry, and I had to throw in this season's fringed Botkier bag for fun. What do you think; did Lindsay hit it or miss it?

The actress attended Longchamp's 60th anniversary celebration in an ensemble that only risk-taking girls like her can pull off. While other guests wore dresses, Diane showed up in high-waisted Grey Ant trousers, a gray crop top, and her favorite fedora. No More Pudge! 5 Tips For Rocking That Cropped Top

If you're anything like me, back in the day - before exercise seemed like an issue - you rocked cropped tops everywhere. Circa 1994, was there something else worth wearing? In recent years, though, I've generally kept a little fabric between my belly and the world. Until now. Cropped tops are a must wear again. Luckily, Pilates instructor Natalie Ridley of The Sports Club/LA (where the likes of Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears and Nicole Kidman have been known to work out) offered up these toning tips, so we can bare (at least a tasteful bit of) our bellies without fear.

If exposing your stomach sends shivers down your spine, don't let the above picture scare you. To rock this style, there's no need to wear skirts this low or show your entire stomach. But, should a little tummy be revealed above high-waisted pants, skirts, or
shorts, you don't want to have to feel embarrassed by pudge either. According to Ridley, these five Pilates moves will tone your mid-section:

1. Roll Up:
"This exercise is intended to strengthen abdominal muscles and inner thighs. Begin lying on your back with the arms straight up toward the ceiling, legs sealed together, and feet stretched forward. Engage your belly and use your arms to pull yourself forward. Roll up. To advance this exercise, you can roll up with a straight single leg (then change to the second leg)."
