Designer Phillip Lim opened his first store in LA and naturally all of Hollywood's pretty young things flocked to his party. Actress Emmy Rossum looked particularly smashing in her bright Phillip Lim draped dress. That mango color is yummy! But what's a dress without the right accessories? Emmy took her outfit from good to fabulous by wearing a black-leather belt, cool drop earrings, and a black bracelet by Cartier, and peep-toe pumps. I have no doubt Lim was proud.

When did belts get so complex? Simple single buckle belts aren't copacetic for designers anymore. These multiple buckle belts are dynamic and make a statement all right. The statement being "Look at my womanly waist!" Not such a bad calling card if you ask me.

What's Up With These Brand Names?!

Has anyone else noticed the emergence of cheeky but somewhat suspicious new brand names? I'm talking about the jean brand Rich & Skinny, the new clothing company Young, Fabulous & Broke, and the belt designers who admit themselves Elegantly Waisted. What's up with these brand names?

When I first noticed Rich & Skinny last Spring I thought: great - not a very aspirational message. Then I stumbled upon Young Fabulous & Broke and related to it a bit more. And behold Elegantly Waisted, which is definitely a clever name for a belt company, but a not-so-subliminal message. But I have to question these and their influence. If teeny boppers see Paris Hilton in her Rich & Skinny jeans, they're going to covet not only them but that lifestyle. And while I'm of age to get Elegantly Waisted, not everyone should. Just fashion for thought.

On to the fun part, if you had to choose which brand name you related to most, which would it be?

Katy Perry donned an icy blue gown by Elie Saab to match her icy blue hair for the Grammy Awards. The dress is quite elegant, with elbow-length sleeves, a demure V-neck back, and a long train. The call to '40s elegance was all over the Fall runways, drawing us in with classic glamour from Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Miu Miu. It's that '40s influence we first garnered from greats like Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner that's now showing up on the pages of Vogue Australia and celebrity favorites like Diane Kruger and Camilla Belle. There are of course more than a few ways to wear it, from the easy androgynous takes in double-breasted blazers and wide-leg pants to the ultra-feminine iterations in pretty pleats and printed dresses, all with nipped waists. To perfect that '40s-era drama, just keep these tips in mind:

Look for feminine detailing like pleats, cinched waists, and peplum to perfect the decade's ladylike tilt.
Look for key fabrics like tweed and printed silks to lend the vintage stylized quality you're after on skirts, dresses, and trousers.
If you're too shy to go for a full-bodied look, opt for vintage-inspired prints like polka dots to channel the trend with ease - and without high risk.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2012

Otherworldly is the best way to describe Sarah Burton's Spring 2012 collection for Alexander McQueen. She referenced the Greek goddess Gaia, who in mythology gave birth to the gods of sea. The oceanic theme arose via undulating ruffles and pearl and coral-crusted embellishments that looked like barnacles. But first, the impeccable tailoring; first with a series of skirt suits, belted high and elegantly on the waist, done in powerful metallic gold and blush tones. Some of the jackets were cut to reveal delicate lace bralettes underneath. A string of babydoll dresses were floaty and full, designed to mimic the movements of a jellyfish, thanks to a plethora of ruffles. For the finale, a string of awe-inspiring gowns, one that spoke to the darkness of McQueen with black, spidery-cut leather. Models wore facemasks cut of lace, but some had beading made to look as if coral were spreading over their faces. It was transformative, and on a larger scale, a transformative moment for Sarah Burton, who has shown that she can lead the Alexander McQueen house forward in a lighter, but still breathtakingly complex direction.

Trends: aquatic theme, pearls, feathers, embellishment, wide belts, asymmetric hems.
Colors: gold, blush, coral, white, cream, black.
Key Piece: babydoll dresses with lace and ruffles were surprisingly light, while the gowns were just incredible. For "everyday" we love the tailored jackets that opened the show.
Accessories: platform gladiator sandals that climbed up models's legs.
Who Would Wear It: The gowns are for the most fashion-forward red carpet goers. But we can see some of the skirt suits working on Sarah Jessica Parker.

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2012

True to form, Gaultier delivered trench coats, sharp suiting, and far sexier fare for Spring 2012. The collection showcased his signature craft in structured, pinstriped suits, then gave way to a sultrier side as models hit the runway with perfectly '40-inspired victory curls - and their look numbers in hand. Evening wear in elegant body-conscious jersey dresses, some draped, some with waist-defining corsets, and still, others with embroidered tops, and leg-baring slits brought femininity in the most mature sense. The statement is somewhat dramatic, especially when you consider Gaultier's tattooed body stockings and piercings, but the dressing is easy and subtly seductive.
