Flapper costumes are an easy, fun Halloween option if you don't have a lot of time and cash. Just create a Louise Brooks-inspired lined eye with a waterproof black cream liner like Boots Botanics Cream Eye Liner ($8). Then, get silent film star lips with a deep red like Topshop Lips in Hazard ($16). Wave your hair and pin it into a bob, or grab an inexpensive flapper wig ($7). Finally, throw on your glitziest 1920s-inspired hair accessory, like this Juicy Couture headband ($65).

Milan Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Roberto Cavalli

A few feather-clad pieces in this Spring collection were very Roberto Cavalli, but surprisingly, the majority were not. I'm glad to see Cavalli expanding his repertoire to include sweet gals, not just wild things. For the latter, the feather trench coats, vests and pants will satiate their sassy appetite. As for the more demure, they will love all the floral details that Cavalli plastered on his floor-length gowns, pant suits and boho button-down dresses. The color palette of this collection was muted: lilacs, whites, purples, greens, peaches. The only bright hues were from the large floral patterns on the evening gowns.

Old Hollywood glamazons had a place in this collection, too. A few flapper-esque and metallic dresses were seen and very were reminiscent of The Great Gatsby.

Trend Alert: The Great Gatsby

Here is my ode to The Great Gatsby. Fashion is experiencing a throwback to the times of art deco, pleats, beading, speak-easies, and the Belle Epoque. Legendary designer Paul Poiret has been referenced and you can see his dropped hemline and flapper hats in a major way in the Proenza Schouler Fall 2007 collection. After all the 70s and 80s we've been seeing on the runway these seem fresh and a step in a new fashion direction - just don't take away my booze!

Nicholas K Fall 2012

Nancy Sinatra's epic "Bang Bang," set the mood for Nicholas Kunz's Fall Nicholas K collection. Inspired by the Taos artists in the '20s and '30s, Kunz imagined a line bursting with Western influence - we loved all of the cool Stetson-inspired hats - and a dash of deco. Fringe was heavily prevalent, making its way onto geometric leather jackets, sheer crochet dresses, and for a vintage touch, metallic fringed flapper dresses. For eveningwear, Kunz showed off her signature draping technique on a variety of gorgeous sexy bias-cut dresses and fluid tops. The outerwear category also shined: parka jackets came complete with inner straps (so the coat can hang just off the shoulders), structured leather jackets highlighted by luxe fur collars, and the closing look featured an undeniably slick black asymmetric leather and canvas zippered coat. Trends: Western influence, fringe, parka jackets, crochet detailing.
Colors: Desert sand, gray, black, army green, sienna.
Key Piece: We loved the simple yet sexy sheer asymmetric and draped dresses; outerwear showed amazing structural pieces.

How to Throw a Midnight in Paris-Themed Oscar Party

If you're planning on throwing an Oscar viewing party for Hollywood's big night on Feb. 26, then I suggest that you go big this year and give your event a theme. Take a cue from the nominees and let best picture nominee Midnight in Paris give you inspiration. It has plenty of elements that translate into an opulent party: Paris, the 1920s, and many of its own scenes of revelry. Here's how to use the Woody Allen film as your party muse, and don't forget to fill out a ballot with your Oscar picks for a chance to win an iPad.

How to decorate: Scatter vintage books by the authors featured in the film, like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and T.S. Eliot, and decorate with mini French flags and twinkle lights. Stand a cardboard cutout of the Eiffel Tower near the entrance of the party.
How to dress: The dress code can be either 1920s French (think flapper and drop-waist dresses), or you can just wear your regular clothes like Owen Wilson's character Gil, but you have to continually act surprised and impressed by your surroundings.
What to serve: A rainbow of French macarons, a cheese plate, baguettes, and fancy crepes. Serve champagne in '20s-style glasses like the ones used in the film (though these are disposable).

How to Throw a The Artist-Themed Oscar Viewing Party

The Oscars air on Sunday, Feb 26, and any movie lover already has the date penciled in. In case your plans are even grander than simply watching the show and you want to throw a viewing party for friends, then why not pick a theme based around one of the best picture nominees? I'm suggesting The Artist as inspiration, the delightful silent film that's been creating a deafening award season buzz. Here's how to pull it off.

How to decorate: All your decorations should be black and white, with art deco accents. Play The Artist movie soundtrack or big band music while guests are arriving. And if you know anyone who owns a Jack Russell Terrier, borrow him and pretend he's Uggie.
How to dress: In glam 1920s Old Hollywood garb. Think tuxes for men, and flapper dresses or diaphanous gowns and long pearls for women.
What to serve: Lots of champagne, of course, along with Manhattans and Sidecars, cocktails popular in the '20s.
How to act: Ask everyone to be as silent as possible, but expressive with their face and hands. It sounds crazy, but at least you won't have to shush anyone when the show starts.
