Fab Tip: Faux Fur, Snip Snip

Sienna Miller's Topshop faux fur coat looked amazing on her (as does Anja Rubik's, left), but it reminded me that faux fur coats often overpower. A while back I bought one, a faux rabbit, and now I know why I haven't given it much wear - it makes me feel gaudy. Thanks to the cold weather recently, it hit me: I couldn't just let that gorgeous brown faux fur sit there, alone. I took matters into my own hands - or rather, gave the matter to my tailor and let her work her magic.

Because fur makes such a statement, it can be overwhelming if it covers your entire upper body. At first I thought, I'll chop off the sleeves and make it a vest. Though that would look cool, it wouldn't keep me as warm. A friend suggested trimming the sleeves down to three-quarter length, just like Dree Hemingway's Adam Lippes For Mango Chubby ($129). It wasn't a huge alteration, and that's the beauty - just a small tweak like taking the sleeves up a few inches totally transformed the look from madness to modern.

What's more, I didn't have to pay a ludicrous dollar amount for it. The lesson is, when a coat, faux fur or not, feels outdated, think fast - chop the sleeves. It'll make a world of difference without costing the world.

Look of the Day: Fall Fur

One of the best things about Autumn is dressing up in warm, cuddly clothes. That's exactly what deuxfashion did today. Her vintage Fall fur vest looks luxe and luscious. I like how she paired it with a loose blouse and skinny jeans for a modern bohemian vibe. Zoe would be proud.

Is Naomi Posing In Dennis Basso's Fur Ad Hypocritical?

Naomi Campbell has everyone talking again. The once-PETA poster girl has hooked up with fur designer Dennis Basso to model his Fall '09 ad campaign. "During these economic times, we wanted to take the opportunity to be noticed - to show we are here and here to stay," Basso said. Helping him reach his goal was photographer Tom Munro, stylist Patti Wilson, and creative director Giovanni Bianco. The ad debuts in September, and industry sources are estimating Naomi's paycheck to be in the mid-six-figure dollar range. Given her past work with PETA, do you think it's hypocritical of Naomi to partner with a Basso?

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Goes Antianimal, Hermes Goes Pro

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has the pick of the litter when it comes to wearing sumptuous designer creations but her selection might be a little more limited now that she's vowed to be more animal friendly. "I do not wear, buy, or own fur or animal skin other than leather or skin of animals raised for feeding purposes. I am not a vegetarian and I don't find it illogical to wear skins of animals whose meat is also eaten." said Bruni-Sarkozy in a recent letter to PETA. Will Carla inspire others to do the same?

Meanwhile, Hermes has just announced it will start breeding its own crocodiles to keep up with the high demand for its iconic handbags. Despite the recession, Hermes produces 3,000 crocodile bags a year, which is not enough for the crazy waiting list - often several years long - of customers. "We cannot face demand. We have massive overdemand. The world is not full of crocodiles." said Hermes chief executive, Patrick Thomas.

On Our Radar: Jason Wu's Exclusive Collections

Look out people: Jason Wu's set to add two new collections to his existing line next year: an eight-piece capsule collection dubbed The Exclusives and a special fur line.

The Exclusives line will specialize in carrying popular silhouettes that can be custom-made in different colors and prints to fit individual retailers' needs. “As the collection grows, the runway shows start to become more directional,” said Wu. “This way, there will always be our bestseller pieces in the showroom. It will allow me to become more experimental, and then to take, perhaps, a color or print from the runway and make it in a silhouette that we know sells well.” The collection wholesales from $390 to $780.

On the flip side, Wu's mink-heavy 15-piece fur line will be part of his Fall collection. “It will be fur garments mixed with fabric. In certain stores, they would hang with clothes, and in bigger department stores, they could hang in the fur departments,” said Wu.

Celebrity Style: Claudia Schiffer

On the heels of her Spring Yves Saint Laurent ad release, Claudia struts her supermodel stuff in a perfectly layered ensemble. Her street style is absolutely admirable. While not everyone can pull off cropped pants and ankle boots - I only recommend that if you're tall and/or lanky - there are other creative things going on here. Her palette is totally Fall, her fur jacket is plush, and her bowed scarf adds a touch of aristocratic flair. You're not Super without big sunnies and a designer bag - local Brit Anya Hindmarch in this case. Keep on strutting, Claudia.

Fun, fun, and fun. Nothing says Casino glamour like the blonde chubby. This is something I think Sharon Stone's turbulent character wore several of throughout the Scorsese film, and, she looked fabulous. These can be found in real or faux fur, brand spanking new or vintage. How much do you want to bet Rachel Zoe's little chubbie is vintage? Emmy's hugs her shoulders just so and jazzes up her blue Alberta Ferretti frock. Sarah Michelle let her Juicy Couture chubby outshine her all-black ensemble - there's nothing wrong with that. Three attempts, three successes. The blonde chubby lives on.

Can You Tell the Difference Between Real and Faux Fur?

I can. But, according to sources, Kate Winslet, an anti-fur advocate, didn't feel the difference when posing au naturel for Vanity Fair. Pre-photo shoot, the magazine told Winslet the blanket was faux. In reality she was posing on a $14,677 silver fox Frette fur throw. Vanity Fair has apologized to the actress for the major mix-up. But we're wondering: Would you be able to tell the difference between real and faux?

Freaky or Fabulous? PETA Protests the Olsen Book Signing

Many of us are influenced by the Olsens, be it Mary-Kate or Ashley. But clearly PETA isn't. In fact, members of the organization stood in front of Barnes & Noble in New York City's Union Square yesterday to protest the girls' book, Influence. They wore masks resembling the twins and held up signs insulting their fur-wearing ways. Do MK and Ash deserve this treatment? Tell me, is this act freaky or fabulous?
