Charles Albert's Over-the-Top Gems: Love It or Hate It?

While I would definitely consider myself a fan of statement necklaces - and statement rings and statement bracelets, for that matter - I'm not sure how I feel about these extreme gemstone pieces from Charles Albert Jewelry. Each brazenly bold bauble is handmade, one of a kind, and pretty enormous. As intrigued as I am by the giant necklaces, I also have to wonder about the safety issues - will I fall over? Will I eventually need a neck brace? What do you guys think about the Charles Albert collection: do you love it or hate it?

Beyond Red: Decorating With Ruby Hues

When it comes to deep saturated color, ruby rules the red tones. This saturated color originally was used to represent the color that best expressed the ruby gemstone. Its gorgeous red color strikes me as passionate, regal, and perfect for adding to your home decor.

Ruby is actually an easier shade to decorate with than straight red, thanks to the brown and purple tones present in varying shades of the color. Essentially, this means you have a red shade that plays well with a variety of other colors. Try mixing a ruby-red chandelier with a duck's-egg shade of painted walls, or add a ruby-red sofa to an eclectic mix of multihued wood furniture and patterned upholstered chairs.

For a modern ruby chandelier that won't strain your pocketbook, try the Boom Lucite Chandelier ($105). Inspired by papercut art, the chandelier features two planes of voluptuous laser cut into lucite curls. For an even greater impact, try hanging a cluster of three.

The color mix in Flavor Paper's Shore Leave Wallpaper ($150) has a fun edge, which matches the imagery. Designed by Emily Minnie, the pattern features old-school tattoo images including stars, pinup girls, and anchors. I'd love to see this papering a powder room in a roller derby girl's home.

Perhaps my absolute favorite find is the Hans Wegner Oculus Chair ($5,500). Available in a variety of colors, this gorgeous chair features a wool upholstery and a stainless steel base. Originally designed in 1960, Carl Hansen & Son began reproducing the Oculus chair three years ago based on the prototype still owned by Wegner's family.

Designer We Love: Sophie Monet

Sophie Monet has been making a strong statement with her line of sculptural wood-based jewelry, and we're smitten with the simple, yet incredibly striking results. The clean, geometric lines are a breath of fresh air from layered chains and embellishments, while the combination of elements ranges from the intriguingly earthy-think turquoise, crystals, and unfinished gemstones-to the decidedly modern: sleek shapes with a gilded touch. Her line is growing; you can now buy it at Fred Segal and Planet Blue, as well as her website. We had a one-on-one with the 24 year-old designer, and got the scoop on her budding line.

FabSugar: How did your jewelry line begin?
Sophie Monet: I started experimenting with wood almost 3 years ago. It was my first summer out of college and after interning for Alexander Wang and Nylon Magazine I was kinda like “Now what?" I made one ring, a few necklaces and a line sheet, then all of sudden I was in Fred Segal and Planet Blue. It’s all fun for me. I get to make art all day, get dirty and end up with an awesome-looking end result.

FS: What made you start with woodmaking?
SM: I’ve always loved making things with my hands. I really just started using wood out of convenience. I grew up around it, playing in my dad’s art studio, gluing scrap pieces together.

FS: What was your breakthrough moment?
SM: Probably when I saw my double finger rings in Women’s Wear Daily. I was excited to tell everyone. Doing interviews like this is just amazing and makes me feel so lucky.

Pamela Love presented a Western-inspired Spring 2012 collection to a packed house at Milk Studios on Saturday night - including Anna Wintour. We walked in to discover a lineup of models paying homage to the Wild West with, for the first time, clothing crafted for the presentation - bandannas, cowboy hats, neutral trousers and skirts, and wide leather belts. As for the jewels, Love stays true to her craft with geometric gold collars, angular rings and bracelets, and cage-like cuffs. Then, a few departures: turquoise and amethyst gemstones adorning breastplates for a warmer, earthier feel than the edgier Love looks we're used to.
