On Our Radar: Gen Art's International Design Competition

Calling all budding fashion designers: Gen Art will start taking submissions for its International Design Competition come Monday, Jan. 19. The winner in each category - women’s ready-to-wear, eveningwear, avant-garde, menswear, and accessories - will be gifted a $5,000 Award for Design Excellence. Eligible participants include student designers and those with less than seven years experience designing under their own name. According to sources, past competitions bolstered the careers of Peter Som and Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte. Deadline for submission is March 17.

How often are you guaranteed a cool party? As you all may or may not know, I spent a good chunk of my years in New York City. My early twenty-something years. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun. And once I discovered Gen Art I learned that their events would be guaranteed fun.

They recently featured yours truly in a Gen Art Pulse email newsletter so I'm sharing the love with this advertorial. So check it:

Gen Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing emerging fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists. And, they throw way fun parties! With offices in New York, LA, San Francisco, Miami and Chicago they produce over 100 events annually ranging from a week-long film festival to star-studded fashion shows, DJ competitions, art exhibitions, multi-media events and more. Basically, it's a really cool organization that throws red carpet events that are seemingly intimidating to attend, but actually aren't.

If you live in any of the above cities you can become a member and experience a guaranteed cool party. Whether you're into fashion (duh), music, art, film, or all of the above, Gen Art is an awesome organization to get involved with. My favorite events to attend: the film screenings & shopping events!

If you don't live in the above listed cities, you can read their online magazine, Gen Art Pulse, for cool stuff relating to design, fashion, film, leisure, music, travel and more.

Celeb Style: Kristin Cavallari

Just this morning I asked if you were going to wear lace this season. If you're on the fence, look to Kristin Cavallari and her fresh take while hosting the UNITE Unveiled: Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion in LA. Her nude lace top is tempered by a slim black leather pencil skirt and neutral accessories. If you look closely, she's wearing a nude bra underneath, but it perfectly blends, revealing just enough. Exotic Paolo Costagli gold jewelry makes for a gilded-glam look. Oh, if you want something juicier, try to guess how much each Hills cast member makes.

Whitney Port's Groovy Polka-Dots: Love It or Hate It?

Whitney Port never ceases to amaze me with her eclectic style. For Gen Art's 15th Anniversary Benefit in NYC, Whitney channeled her inner Cher and donned a groovy polka-dot dress by Pamella Roland, bronze heels, and an Anna Sheffield Dauphine cocktail ring. The large silver dots and exaggerated bell sleeves demand attention, but I'm not sure if I'm feeling it - a little too over the top. What are your thoughts on Whitney's Warhol-inspired outfit?

Designer Spotlight: Katy Rodriguez

Drama, luxury and jewel tones are words to describe Katy Rodriguez's Fall collection. But there's a lot more to this designer than that...

Born and raised in San Francisco, Katy Rodriguez initially made her mark in 1996 as co-founder of designer vintage store, Resurrection. With business partner Mark Haddawy, she also collaborated on a collection of their own called 'caitie et marc.'

Known for her abilities to cultivate the best vintage from around the world, Rodriguez has also been recognized by Vogue on its annual Best Dressed List. In 2005, Rodriguez struck out on her own, debuting her eponymous collection. Chosen as one of Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces,” Rodriguez showed her Spring 2007 collection at the Gen Art Show in October of 2006. She went on to show her Fall 2007 collection at the Gramercy Park Hotel at an intimate gathering of celebrity clients and editors.
