On Our Radar: Gen Art's International Design Competition

Calling all budding fashion designers: Gen Art will start taking submissions for its International Design Competition come Monday, Jan. 19. The winner in each category - women’s ready-to-wear, eveningwear, avant-garde, menswear, and accessories - will be gifted a $5,000 Award for Design Excellence. Eligible participants include student designers and those with less than seven years experience designing under their own name. According to sources, past competitions bolstered the careers of Peter Som and Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte. Deadline for submission is March 17.

How often are you guaranteed a cool party? As you all may or may not know, I spent a good chunk of my years in New York City. My early twenty-something years. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun. And once I discovered Gen Art I learned that their events would be guaranteed fun.

They recently featured yours truly in a Gen Art Pulse email newsletter so I'm sharing the love with this advertorial. So check it:

Gen Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing emerging fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists. And, they throw way fun parties! With offices in New York, LA, San Francisco, Miami and Chicago they produce over 100 events annually ranging from a week-long film festival to star-studded fashion shows, DJ competitions, art exhibitions, multi-media events and more. Basically, it's a really cool organization that throws red carpet events that are seemingly intimidating to attend, but actually aren't.

If you live in any of the above cities you can become a member and experience a guaranteed cool party. Whether you're into fashion (duh), music, art, film, or all of the above, Gen Art is an awesome organization to get involved with. My favorite events to attend: the film screenings & shopping events!

As young adults, many of us enjoy a unique time in our lives when we can relocate wherever we like. We’re often free from any significant ties, such as kids or a mortgage, that can tether us to a certain location. Plus, with the technological advances of the past decade, we need not fear losing touch with family and friends; we can stay connected with the touch of a button - regardless of distance.

So when the world is your oyster, how do you decide in which part to settle? Here are six questions to ask when figuring out which city is best for you:

Will I find good work there?

In today's tough market, Generation Y has had a particularly difficult time finding and keeping a job: While the job market struggles to regain its footing, with the national unemployment rate at 9.5% as of June, 25- to 34-year-olds suffer joblessness at a 10.3% rate, and 20- to 24-year-olds are unemployed at a staggering 15.3% rate. But some areas have held up better against the recession. Austin, Tex., Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C., for example, have experienced lower unemployment than the rest of the country.

Jobs in certain industries are more prevalent in some areas. For example, if you’re interested in politics, the nation’s capital is the obvious choice. Or if you aspire to “make it work” as fashion’s next hot designer, the Big Apple might suit you best. Texts and Tunes: I'd Like the Goo-Gen-Heim

There are good books and then there are texts that inspire. A.C. Hollingsworth's love of the Guggenheim Museum shines through on every page of I'd Like the Goo-Gen-Heim ($15), the story the artist wrote and illustrated. An introduction to modern art for wee ones, it's the colorful tale of Andy who celebrates his birthday with an outing to Central Park with his father and the older gent falls asleep on a bench.

While entertaining himself with a balloon, the lad looks up to see a beautiful building that "seemed to smile at him" - Frank Lloyd Wright's famed structure - and goes to explore all that it has to offer. Inside, he studies the works of Kandinsky, Kline, Picasso and Leger before returning to his dad. Upon waking up, Andy's father asks him what he wants for his birthday and the lil boy replies, "I'd Like the Goo-Gen-Heim." Originally published in 1970, the text was recently reprinted with permission of the author's widow.
