Get the Look: Geometric Prints at Derek Lam

Derek Lam's Spring 2012 collection channeled midcentury luxury, and as FabSugar noted about the Derek Lam show, "Think Palm Springs, Frank Sinatra, and Angie Dickinson by the pool, and you have the inspiration for Lam's upbeat collection that still carried his signature clean lines and classic silhouettes."

One of my favorites from the collection was this '60s geometric print dress, whose look reflected many prints I've been spotting in the décor world as well.

To get the look of this vibrant design, head for furniture and accents featuring cubes, spheres, hexagons, and other geometric patterns. Home décor from designers like Trina Turk and Jonathan Adler are always a good bet as is the current product line from DwellStudio.

One of my current favorites is FermLiving's Squares Blanket ($150, middle row, left). The overlapping Escher-like cube print is super fresh right now, and since the blanket's made of cotton, not wool, you can use it in all seasons.

I also can't forget the Kartell Componibili Round Three-Door Tower ($160, bottom row, far right). A long-time favorite, this piece may not feature a geometric pattern, but its mix of cylinder, rectangle, and circle within its design make it an obvious choice. Use it as a side table, bedside dresser, or catchall in a hallway.

Trend Alert: Bolder Than Bold Geo Dresses

Must . . . fight . . . post-holiday depression. I tend to grab cozies and neutrals after a month of decadent nibbles, sequins, and party gear. But Jennifer Lopez is a believer in the healing power of bolder than bold geo dresses. Though the holidays are over, party time isn't - I already have some cool parties lined up in January, and awards season is upon us. And nothing perks the party up like a standout print. Jennifer's draped Mara Hoffman encompasses Winter colors, and the longer sleeves remind us it's still hibernation time. Hibernating never looked so hot. Come Spring, shed the tights, and these will shine just as bright.

Who Wore It Better? Giambattista Valli Yellow, Black and White Fab Frock

One of my newest favorite designers is proving to be a fave amongst the glitterati as well. This Giambattista Valli bold geometric strapless dress is just so awesome; I envy both of these ladies. While I prefer SJP with her hair down - her face is just so long - I prefer SJP's minimal look and swirly black shoes. Jessica looks a bit disheveled when she wore this to the designer's Fall show back in March - and tan lines are a no-no! You can't see her shoes but they were black platforms with a criss-cross toe. I'll take this dress any day, but who do you think wore it better?

Trend Alert: Geometry

As much as my mom will tell you I was a good student at math, I hated Geometry. I don't know what it was but I struggled with angular equations; I think it's a left-brain right-brain thing. I did enjoy Algebra though...Enough about my brain, point is: I'd rather wear Geometry than learn it! These striking prints have a decidedly 60s feel to them, but are plenty modern with updated styling. Give your wardrobe a smart boost with one of these perplexing prints.
