Freaky or Fabulous? Giles's Spring Spiders

For his Spring '10 runway show at Paris Fashion Week, Giles Deacon delivered a colorful and quirky collection filled with prom-inspired dresses, metallic pants, and see-through gowns. However, it was the abundance of creepy, crawly spiders that induced my fear. Indeed, I suffer from slight arachnophobia (although I guess I don't mind daddy longlegs, they eat other bugs, right?). And so, I don't understand why anyone would want to have a furry, eight-legged creature hanging off her chest. Maybe there are some fashionphiles out there that share Giles's love for spiders, just not me. Freaky or fabulous?

Great Expectations at Paris Fashion Week

The most exciting week of fashion is upon us. Don't get me wrong - New York Fashion Week always inspires, but Paris just seems . . . magical. WWD offered a behind-the-scenes look at some of the fashion houses last-minute musings. I can already tell Isabel Marant will make us swoon all over again with hot-pink tunics and fringed and studded boots. Everyone's talking about Peter Copping's first collection for Nina Ricci (showing tonight). And the brilliant Viktor & Rolf are gonna go all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on a too-perfect gown. Can't wait? Neither can I!

Giles Deacon Fine Jewelry Is Oh So Fine

Giles Deacon is showing his Spring collection at Paris Fashion Week, as opposed to London FW this week, but he did show his fine jewelry collection in London town. This is the man who brought Pac-Man to the catwalk don't forget, so his baubles have to be something to talk about. The designer spoke of his favorite: "My particular favourite is a little character called Eek, he's from a past collection. He's really sweet and comes in silver and gold on a pendant, with diamond eyes. He's the one I would wear." The rest sounds like it has just as much personality: Swarovski crystals, pearls, semiprecious stones, stubby spikes, aggressively moshed together. The collection will be available at select retailers and priced from about $400 to $4,000.

Giles Deacon Says Bonjour to Paris

Burberry, Matthew Williamson, Pringle, and Jonathan Saunders all recently announced that they're taking their collections back to London Fashion Week. But Londoner Giles Deacon, just revealed he's packing up and heading to Paris. The designer will show his Spring 2010 lineup during Paris Fashion Week, which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8. It's important to note that Deacon just won France’s annual ANDAM Award, created for designers under the age of 40 who want to expand their businesses in France. The prize? $226,000. C'est cool!

Fab Flash: Giles Deacon Is Bigger and Better Than Ever

Like many self-financed designers, Giles Deacon has experienced his share of trying times but things are starting to look up for the designer. With the help of Italy-based manufacturer, Castor Srl, Giles Deacon is expanding with plans to quadruple his business and give him a broader international reach. “At a certain point, we took a step back and asked ourselves: 'What do we want this business to be?'" said Deacon. “The answer was a big business, with on-time deliveries, proper precollections, and a bigger distribution network.” To put things in perspective, Giles currently operates 38 stores; his new partnership with Castor Srl will up his count to roughly 140 locations. Giles first order of business will be creating a resort collection debuting at the end of June. Go Giles!

Freaky or Fabulous? Giles's Pac-Women

While my girls in London wrap up their own Fashion Week, Giles - someone I've always had my eye on - sent rather tame, graphic designs down his runway. But what wasn't tame was the Pac-Man-inspired massive head gear. So it's a bit distracting from the shift dresses and draped black gown, it's super fun. I enjoy the contrast of the tame clothes and ode to the '80s accessory. It takes me back to dentist visits where I played Pac-Man while my teeth soaked in fluoride. Maybe this pleasant memory is why I don't mind visiting my dentist and Giles's poking fun.

Fab Flash: House of Schiaparelli To Be Restored

Update: Olivier Theyskens was thought to maybe take over the helm but sources have confirmed this false. 2010 is the date we can expect to witness the revival.

Before you know it, we may have another storied fashion house back on our hands. The Italian business mogul Diego Della Valle, who also owns Tod's, bought the rights to Elsa Schiaparelli earlier this year.

Ever since, he's been on the hunt for a designer to bring the house, most famous for its 1937 surrealist lobster evening dress collaboration with Salvador Dali, back to its former glory. Talks with Roland Mouret fell through, but WWD is reporting that British designer Giles Deacon has risen to the top of the pile. Exciting!

Kuwaiti-born Dima Rashid, who has collaborated with British designer Giles Deacon, designs her jewelry in Cairo, a fact that is reflected in the style of her pieces. She mixes battered gold, brightly colored gemstones, and symbols often associated with Egypt to produce her spectacular line, Dima. The Fatima Hand or the Evil Eye are often concealed within Dima's pieces to guard against evil. I've always had an obsession with Egyptian symbolism, so of course I love it!

London Fashion Week, Spring '09: Bring on the Quirk

New York Fashion Week ignites some trends, but it's in London where the envelope is pushed beyond the limit. Take, for example, Giles Deacon's Pac-Women. London Fashion Week is nearing completion, but there was enough quirk to last a lifetime, or at least until next season. While overexposure started in New York, the king of quirk, Henry Holland, took the concept to a whole new, playful level. Proceed with caution.

Shoe Designer Spotlight: Jonathan Kelsey

Move over Christian Louboutin - there's a new shoe man in town, and he's serving up sexy and intelligent footwear. I'm not implying that Loub needs to move out, but his new neighbor, Jonathan Kelsey, is posing a serious threat. Jonathan honed his skills at Jimmy Choo, Cacharel, and Giles Deacon, so his posh designs should come as no surprise. His current collection, available at Saks Fifth Avenue, is a nod to the mid-'70s collection in his mother's closet. Cute! Prices range from $550 to $975. Pricey, yes, but so hard to say no.
