Interior Designer Martha Angus Shares Her Tips For Refreshing Your Home's Look in the New Year

San Francisco-based interior designer Martha Angus is the first West Coast designer to curate a boutique on Gilt Home. When I asked Martha about her inspiration for the boutique's look and product line, she noted, "We try to be true to ourselves. We love graphic things - you know black and white and color - and we just thought that was our signature. We just felt like more color, more punch, would be fun. And we feel like we have done pretty well with it."

Gilt Groupe to Launch Online Food Site With Ruth Reichl

After Gourmet magazine folded in October 2009, everyone wondered what Editor in Chief Ruth Reichl's next move would be. She laid low for awhile, but now she's jumping back into the food industry in a big way. Not only is Reichl a judge on the upcoming third season of Top Chef Masters, but she's also involved with the Gilt Groupe's latest project, a new food website, Gilt Taste.

The site will be an "online market" that offers "exceptional artisan foods with stories and recipes from the experts." Old Gourmet senior writer Francis Lam, who currently oversees Salon's food site, is said to be joining Reichl at Gilt Taste. There's no doubt that power duo will create a buzz-worthy, excellently written and curated food site. I'm excited to check it out when it launches in late Spring.

"What! You got that from Gilt?" is a common envious reaction I have when my bargainista friend shows me her latest cyber buys. She is a true bargain eshopper - someone who is dedicated and consistent towards the art of online shopping. As for me, I can never sit still long enough to diligently pore over countless clothing images online. If you're a big fan of Gilt Groupe, check out these other sites that will help you score designer items at a steal.

Rue La La: Another savvy find, Rue La La runs two-day sales that start at 10 a.m. EST for all kinds of merchandise. When I was surfing through the site, I spotted everything from luxurious comforters to Diane von Furstenburg shoes, and even furniture for kids. Looking at their upcoming sales, Rue La La almost seems to be a hybrid of Gilt and Groupon, because mixed in with the product sales are discounted Culinary Institute of America classes.
Ideeli: If you decide to join the ranks of the three million Ideeli members, you'll be able to buy goods at 80 percent off. My favorite finds were 7 For All Mankind Jeans that were going for 60 percent off the regular price and the cutest baby dresses for half off by celebrity mom Ali Landry.

Patterned Bedding: Making It Work

I'm excited to present a story from one of my favorite sites, ShelterPop!

In honor of the ultra-chic patterned bedding in the ShelterPop-curated Gilt sale, we're showing you how to create a room around eye-catching sheets and duvets.Patterned bedding is one of the easiest ways to create a personalized, fun bedroom. But what about the rest of the pieces in the room? Inspired by the dreamy, patterned bedding in our Gilt sale (where all the items in the above image are available!), we asked Sarasota, FL-based interior designer Lindsay Milner of A Design Story for some ideas on keeping a room from getting too overwhelming.

Keep the rest solid: "Don't let it all be patterned bedding - throw in some solid sheets and throw pillows to ground your comforter. This is an easy way to tone things down right away."
Consider an opposing pattern: "With patterned bedding, your bed becomes a focal point. So be cognizant of other patterns and colors you place around the room. If you have striped bedding, add in polka dots, flowers or other geometric patterns into the space. Better to be interesting than matchy-matchy."
Want more pattern? Keep it small: "Rugs and drapes should be neutral or in a delicate pattern."
Stay within the color family: "If you're going to add in other patterned items, see that they have similar colors, and focus on accessories like window shades, artwork and throw blankets."
