Style For Style: Gum Gum, Go Away

After the following experience, I vow to never toss out my gum on the floor again. I was ordering a drink at a nice bar recently when I felt my shoe sticking to the ground. Shoot, I stepped on gum. How did that happen? No time to dwell, I had to get the gum off, pronto. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I wasn't wearing this swoon-worthy Proenza Schouler Elastic Wrap Sandal ($595), but I was wearing a newly purchased shoe I love.

First I grabbed a napkin from the bar and used it to remove as much of the gum as possible. I didn't throw out the napkin just yet.
I then asked the bartender for an ice cube and used it to rub the surface of the remaining gum until it was fully wet.
Finally, I used the gum from inside the napkin to blot the stuck gum with it. Voila.

If you happen to have a jar of peanut butter on hand, you can also use this technique:

Grab a butter knife and a jar of peanut butter, preferably without nuts.
Spread a thick coat of peanut butter all over the area with gum. Allow it to sit for five minutes.
Take a scrub brush and scrub the peanut butter/gum until it's almost gone.
Wash what is left on your shoe in the sink.

I let a friend borrow a lovely ruffled jacket I have, much like this Max Mara Ruffle Front Jacket, $890. Big mistake! Somehow she got gum on the sleeve, which is a mystery because she wasn't chewing gum the entire night (yeah right!). Naturally, I freaked out, but she remained calm. Little did I know that she had a trick up her sleeve.

Yes, you are staring at a piece of ice. My smarty pants friend took one cube and rubbed it on the gum-infested area until the ice had practically melted and the gum had come off. It's hard to tell how long the process takes but if this happens to you, rub the ice on the gum and scratch it off until it disappears. It's labor intensive but worth it if you want to salvage your clothing! Please be mindful of sensitive fabrics like suede and silk.

The leaves are starting to change colors, an umbrella is becoming your new best friend, and your nice suede moccasin boots start to feel the abuse - what's the fashionable solution? Hunter Gum boots! These boots are sleek, chic and don’t really look like wellies. You can without a doubt, wear them with your favorite pair of jeans, tucked in, and they will have a very urban, I am going hunting with Prince Charles this afternoon look. To be totally honest, Hunter boots are the real deal, the Rolls Royce of wellies - and they come in a cute, fun array of colors. My favorites? The pink pair and the black – so classy and versatile. I could possibly go for the timeless black, forest green, or navy option, although all the colors are Fab. Hard to make up my mind . . . If Kate Moss can rock these boots and get rave reviews in Vogue, I'm sure any fashion-conscious girl can pull these off.

I always figured I was perfectly capable of brushing my own teeth without the help of an electric toothbrush. Then, I got one, and I realized the benefit is actually how gentle they are on your gums. Fab's Going To Fashion Week! My Style Survival Kit

The countdown to New York Fashion week has officially begun! So obviously I'm super excited. What's more, Fab will be a guest blogger on ELLE.com! For real. This is big time ladies - and you'll have to check me out over there! While some of you are helping to conjure up some fabulous looks for me, I thought I could enlist your help in more pre-fashion week preparedness.

I have been gathering some survival items the past couple weeks and I just made a trip to the drugstore to stock up on some more. I thought it would be fun to share but also, let me know if I'm forgetting anything! As for my fashion week wardrobe and packing - stay tuned!

Here's what you see:
