Celebrity Style: Blake Lively

Blake is forming quite a fan club and we can all see why . . . just look at her! She is the quintessential American girl. Blonde, beautiful, bubbly, and on her way to visit ABC's Good Morning America with the rest of the adorable cast of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. There's always room in my week for a great jeans look. Blake made this her own by throwing on layered aquamarine beaded necklaces and natural cork wedges. As always, her hair looks amazing and her smile is dazzling. I don't know if I would have opted for a black bowling bag, but Blake makes it work.

Style For Style: Halt-er Your Bra

I've never had major problems finding the right bra for a particular top, but I have a bigger-busted friend for whom finding the right bra is a constant battle. Over the weekend, she and I got ready together before heading out for a night on the town, and that is when I witnessed her struggle. She wore a halter top, much like this Theory Kensy Halter Top ($180). Having fairly large breasts, she stays away from strapless bras because they give her that unflattering line across her chest. She wanted to wear her regular bra but didn't want the straps to show because of the halter cut.

However, if you can wear a strapless bra with your halter top that is your best option. But if you get those funky lines that cut across your breasts, the following may work for you. Disclaimer: Make sure your halter top isn't one with spaghetti straps or a V-front. In order for this to work, it must be a mock neck or high-neck halter.

Wear your bra and not your halter top. It's preferable if your bra and halter color match just in case it peeps out.
Have a long piece of sturdy sewing thread (about 12 inches) nearby.
Take your left bra strap in your left hand, and your right bra strap in your right hand, and pull them both in front of you until they touch across the middle of your chest.
You may need the assistance of another person at this point. Grab the thread and tie it around your two bra straps, which are still in front of you. Go around as many times with the string until you feel your bra straps are secure across your chest. Cut the remaining thread so you have a clean knot.
Wear your halter top and you'll notice your bra straps are now hidden underneath the top because they are in the front middle of your chest!

Rachel Comey Fall 2012

Rachel Comey showed us her sophisticated side for Fall '12, streamlining her usual quirk factor with a modern, refreshing twist. "Normally for Fall we dive into print and pattern and color," said Comey. "This time, I pulled all of that out and cleared the air." With that in mind, the designer showcased laser-cut cotton dresses and wool felt tops, digital-print knee-length skirts, pretty prints, and shiny boxy leather tops. Color pops included an oversized bright orange coat and dress and even a heart-print dress doused in hot pink. Comey's shoes, a cult favorite amongst many, included quirky-cool black-and-white cap-toe loafers, flatforms, and chunky ankle boots. To finish, Comey closed out the show with an array of cocktail-appropriate black dresses, ranging from a simple, slinky halter-neck LBD to a shimmering full-skirted version. The celebrities brought out their fashion A-game tonight, and we've been taking notes on all of their gorgeous looks. While it was hard deciding, we narrowed it down to the top five: Diane Kruger left us awestruck in a halter gown by Prada, Viola Davis – winner of the best actress award for her role in The Help - looked sophisticated and sexy in a red gown by Raoul, and Michelle Williams channeled true Hollywood glamour in black and white Chanel. Kirsten Dunst also stole our hearts in chiffon layers by Christian Dior, while Emma Stone radiated in a green printed dress by Jason Wu. Spring was seen in a darker light for Stefano Pilati's collection for Yves Saint Laurent. Instead of the bright colors and prints favored on many runways this season, Pilati showcased a gorgeous jewel-toned collection highlighting blue, purple, and forest green hues with a sprinkling of mint green to lighten up the mood. Showing what he does best, the designer created sharp tailored jacquard trousers and structured coats. The feminine touch in the way of fit-and-flare skirts, ruffle detailed blouses, printed coats, and sexy halter tops. For eveningwear, Pilati created sultry sheer black gowns, cut deep in the front and flecked with gold shimmer. The footwear selection was covetable, showing gold-plated suede loafers dipped in beautiful jewel tones, lace-up flats, cap-toe pumps, and platform loafers. Shoes that are sure to hit the must-haves list of every stylista.

Phillip Lim's Spring 2012 collection was built around the ideas of geometry, activewear, and kites. Yes, those wispy things we send up to the sky inspired Lim's soft, flowing clothes, many of which ruffled and moved with the slightest breeze. There was lots of silk, from side-slit trousers to delicate dresses with geometric ruffles. There were sporty pieces as well, including tops that looked like they had been cut from a thin rubber (more chic than it sounds), micro twill utility vests, and a bonded leather round collar jacket. The trousers will be a must have next season, done in soft colors like limoncello and lavender for ultimate breezy style. So, too, will be the metallic silver sandals that look so insanely good with Lim's pastel-hued offerings.

Trends: Sporty, structural shapes, pastels, vests.
Colors: Soft pastels like limoncello, lilac, and shell pink; tempered with black, ivory, and pecan.

NYFW Inspired Style: Chic Halters

2011 Independent Spirit Awards: Naomi Watts

Chic couple Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts opted for city chic style with lots of black on the red carpet. Naomi donned a Chanel LBD, with a sexy halter top and pleated skirt. She kept it casual with a black cardigan and platform heels, relegating all the color and pop to a multicolored Chanel bag. Shiva Rea Will Light Your Fire

Having heard many yoga enthusiasts with diverse practices praise Shiva Rea, I looked forward to taking her Fire and Flow: Agni Namaskar class at the San Francisco Yoga Journal Conference a couple of weeks ago. I must admit, I was a little skeptical too and feared her style would be overly spiritual, pedantic, or judgmental (I have been lectured about the evils of cheese by yoga instructors and really just wanted to get my asana on). But two hours and 108 push-ups later, I was sold. She is one cool lady, even when she's talking about fire tending in the modern age.

Shiva talks with her entire body; almost as if she is dancing her words. She's goofy, too, a plus in my book. But when discussing the power of yoga, Shiva can get pretty serious. For her yoga is a movement meditation and the fiery sun salutation is the perfect tool for understanding your strength. Throughout the class of sun salutation, we completed nine cycles of 12 push-ups, along with a crazy array of arm balances, chair poses, and warriors. The class was empowering.

Walking around the class in a flowy halter top, wearing a large cuff bracelet, Shiva adjusted students and helped me settle into triangle pose by lengthening my spine. She is at once feminine and strong. We chanted at the end of the class briefly, too. Then she sent us on our way, but not before telling us to eat. "You all deserve a big farmer's breakfast after that class." I was overjoyed to hear something so profane after learning the zen of "adjusting to what is" through yoga poses. If you have a chance to study with Shiva Rea, I say do it.
