LA Fashion Week Spring 2008, Monarchy: Love It or Hate It?

Monarchy attempted the menswear theme that many designers have been dabbling with recently. Only, their route was more boyish than manly. This particular look reminds me a lot of Hansel from the German fairytale. On the runway (or green carpet in this case), it looks whimsical and cute, but on the streets, it would look wacky. Perhaps it would be a fashionable Halloween costume? What do you say?

Color Palette: Black, White, and Mustard

I love the graphic, playful pattern on this strapless dress worn by a model at Bluepring 2011 Spotlight Singapore. Designed by Hansel, the dress features a mellow mustard-hued sash tie. You can easily translate this color scheme to a home look. Start with a black sofa, like the WIlliams-Sonoma Home Beverly Sofa ($3,200) in coal. Then, layer on a graphically patterned black and white rug. My favorite for the past few years has been the Design Within Reach Manuscrit Rug ($3,400). If that price is too steep for you (as it is for me), try this La Poeme Rug, which has a similar look for thousands of dollars less.

Add a yellow floor lamp or pendant lamp, like the Kartell Suspension Lamp ($270) to add a shot of color to the mix, and make sure to accent your space with yellow flowers like ranunculus or roses.

Are Classic Fairy Tales a Thing of the Past?

Are the fairy tales we grew up with (not to mention our parents and grandparents) too scary and politically incorrect for our children? According to a nationwide survey in Great Britain, The Baby Website found that one in four moms forgo classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Little Red Riding Hood over The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Gruffalo.

Traditional fairy tales were first popularized in the early 1800s with the publishing of The Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1812 and Hans Christian Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales and Stories in 1835. The stories have been told to generations of children through various waves of social reforms, but today's parents deem the classics to be too scary (Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in a forest) or not PC (the dwarfs in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). The survey revealed that parents feared that this text would give their tots nightmares, with 65 percent saying they purposely choose happy stories for bedtime reading.
