Trend Alert: Full Skirts

You don't need to be full of yourself to pull off a full skirt. Au contraire my fine females. For those who have been hynotized by the voluminous trend, here's a fun way to practice. Allow me to offer you some tips to work the the full skirt:

Make sure you seek a full skirt that is the right waist for your shape. To show off a narrow middle, pick one that sits high on the hips, above the navel. To hide a tummy, have it rest below the navel.
Strike a balance; with volume on bottom, go slim on top. Tuck in your blouse or opt for a slim-cut shirt or jacket.
This look is super-feminine so try to toughen it up with a chunky cuff or a fly belt,
as not to be too goodie goodie.

The Look For Less: Alice + Olivia Velvet Leggings

I can't think of a chicer way to stay warm right now than velvet leggings. They're cozy and luxurious, a more mature cousin of the liquid legging. These Alice + Olivia Velvet Leggings ($128) are one of the many I've spotted. They would look good under dresses, but better on their own. I prefer not pay over $100 for them so I found a cheaper version . . .

These INC International Concepts Velvet Leggings ($39) are slightly cropped but they're equally cute. I especially love the way they hug the leg so tightly. I can see them working well on a romantic date - just imagine the softness he'll feel if he touches your leg! If you don't love the crop, either wear them with tall boots or layer cozy socks over them.

Macy's Hits the Runway

Love her or love to hate her, Angela Keslar won last night's Project Runway challenge to design a three-piece outfit for Macy's INC International Concepts Fall 2006 collection. Here's Angela's winning military-inspired design:

As part of winning the challenge, Angela not only receives immunity for next week (great, we get to keep her another week...), but Macy's is now offering her design to the masses online and in select stores.

If you can't make it out to one of Macy's retail stores, the cropped jacket and grey trouser are available here for $129 and $89, respectively.

The pink V-neck tee with ruched sleeves at the forearm is available here for $39.

Personally, I like Angela's original concept execution better than the Macy's makeover version. But maybe one of you can make it work!

Trend Alert: The LWD

White is in the air, and beyond. It all started when we were struck by white lightening, and then there were the white accessories, white shades, and just an overall influx of white. So it's no surprise that as the weather heats up, the celebs are looking heavenly in dresses of this hue. The versatility of a LWD is profound: one can either look inappropriately like a 6-year-old or one can look like a sophisticated woman. I would recommend the latter, and stick to styles that are either minimal or retro - to avoid looking like Alice in Wonderland.

Dress You Up! Maxi Dresses

Ok so this first model in a serious maxi dress looks like a tree, but that is the effect the longest dress of all can help one achieve. I was actually just on a hunt for a maxi dress and ended up scoring an awesome black silk Corey Lynn Calter one. I wore it to Fashion Week Live last month. I gotta tell ya, I stood out (in a good way) amongst all the legs and got several compliments. My analysis: maxi dresses are the next 'It' dress. After all, the only way to go after the mini dress is down, way down. I wore mine with some exotic flats because I am tall; if you're on the shorter side, these look retro redone with a solid pair of wood-heeled wedges.

Project Runway Recap: You Reap What You Sew

I know how much you girls hate it when I give away the punchline before the break, so here's the split-second wrap-up: some people designed some stuff, someone broke some rules and got kicked off the show, somebody won the challenge and someone else lost.

Heidi, as usual, looked gorgeous.

First the challenge. Last week's challenge was to design a three-piece outfit for Macy's INC International Concepts Fall 2006 line. The judges were Mahmet Tangoren, Macy's sportswear VP, Vera Wang and Nina Garcia. (Paging Michael Kors! Mr. Kors, please report to the Project Runway set...)

As you may already know from last week's post, Macy's Hits the Runway, Angela (everyone hiss in unison, please) won the challenge with a military-inspired suit. Vera Wang apparently "loved the pink with the masculine grey suiting."

Is pink and grey really all that inspired? Weren't we all rocking the pink and grey combo in the 80s?

Moving on. Poor Bonnie unfortunately lost the challenge and went home on the strength of this horrible polyester pant outfit.

For a girl who designs professionally for Nike's young, athletic types, this concoction could not scream "old lady" any louder. Sorry, Bonnie!

But honestly, who cares about Bonnie when we can dish about Keith! Keith "Cheater-Cheater-Pumpkin-Eater" Michael was caught with some "absolute no-nos" under his bed (also known as a stack of design how-to books) and some unaccounted for time alone with the internet. (We assume he was looking for design ideas.)

The producers called in Tim Gunn to open a very dignified and elegant can of whoop-a$$ and break the dramatic news, "Keith, you're fired." Oh wait, that's a different show...

Keith packed up his things that same evening and dramatically declared to the world, "My image has been tarnished forever. I'm off the show and I'm going to be a laughingstock to my friends."

But we all know that Hollywood loves a sinner, and you don't need to worry too much about Keith. To see what Keith is up to post-Runway, check out his new look...

Even more fun than exposing lying, cheating Keith, it was truly heartwarming to see the love-fest that's circling around Angela.

Witness Jeffrey, who very subtly clued us in on his feelings with this gem...

"Almost more than having to make something I don't like, I really hate having to make something for someone I don't like." But how do you really feel about her, Jeffrey?

And Uli, who apparently doesn't want to be roomies...

And Michael, who ended up working on Angela's winning design team...

"When Angela picked me as a teammate, I was kinda like, 'Awww.... daaaaaaymn!" (For those of you who can't quite interpret the tone of that quote, trust me when I say he was conveying a distinct sense of disappointment.)

And Laura who, even while trying to pay Angela a compliment, busted out with this zinger...

"It was more appropriate for this particular challenge than the full-tilt-boogie-Angela-quilted extravaganza of puff." Even her insults sound uptown.

And just because I can't bear to leave these two out, I want to reassure you that Vincent and Bradley are still complete nut-jobs.

Vincent: "Grey is very important. I hear it's going to take the place of brown."

Bradley: "I'm a fish out of water! I'm a squid with no ocean! I'm an eagle with no sky!"

We expect their alien spacecrafts will return for them in the next few episodes.
