Designer Spotlight: Kate and Kass

Raised in a family of film and music aficionados, it was destined that Anya Teresse meld her influences from her parents, Kate and Kass, into her passion of designing. From the time she was 12 years old, Kate and Kass designer, Anya Teresse, started using her lunch money to buy vintage clothing.

Drawing inspiration from classic old films and strong female figures from the past and present, Teresse designs clothing filled with strength, quirk, and femininity. Plackets, pleating, and pin-tuck detailing are apparent with each piece named after her influences such as the late and great Jackie Onassis and Jane Fonda. Her 2008 Fall collection encompasses a beautiful selection of vintage florals and feminine tones along with a couple modern pieces. My favorite? The sleek and chic batwing Michelle Obama jacket.

A Fabby Halloween: Barbarella

Apparently, Barbarella was the star of many male fantasies back in the day. It's no wonder why - just look at the Queen of the Galaxy. Jane Fonda wowed audiences in the 1968 erotic science fiction Barbarella. In retrospect, the rinky dink special effects wowed me upon first viewing, as did Barbarella. With her teased blonde mane and Paco Rabanne designed wardrobe she embarked on wild intergalactic adventures, and love affairs, in style. Part fetish-wear, part space age chic, every girl should play the Queen of the Galaxy in her lifetime.

Special tip: when I was Barbarella I raided my local fabric store for metallic and sparkly fabrics. I sort of twisted and pinned them wherever they worked (and to give me coverage in sensitive areas). And don't forget about fun with plastic!

Happy 45th, Valentino!

This past weekend, while showing his Fall couture show, Valentino celebrated his 45th anniversary in the fashion biz - quite the accomplishment...bravo!

It all started in 1961, when Valentino Garavani dedicated five evening gowns to Jackie Kennedy, and she become a loyal client - she wore Valentino when she mourned President Kennedy, and she wore Valentino when she married Aristotle Onassis.

But in his 45 years of fashion, Jackie O hasn't been the only woman wearing Valentino for an important event in her life: Julia Roberts, Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, and Hilary Swank have all accepted Oscars in Valentino dresses. Elizabeth Taylor was wearing Valentino when she met Richard Burton. Valentino outfitted Princess Diana to help her transform from shy girl to princess material.

The man has been around - at 75, his contemporaries Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, even Coco Chanel - have long passed on their legacies to other designers. But Valentino's not ready to stop yet - he continues to quash rumors of his retirement - as he told The Telegraph: "I am already working on my next collections." Let's hope there are many more collections yet for Valentino!
