On Our Radar: Kate Spade Powers Up Clothing Collection

Under the direction of new creative director and co-president Deborah Lloyd, look forward to a hefty crop of apparel from Kate Spade. After an initial launch exclusively in Kate Spade stores next Spring, the clothing collection will be available for wholesale in the Fall of 2009.

The full Spring collection, which is boasted by Lloyd to have more apparel than ever before, will sell at retailers including Saks, Bloomingdale’s, and Nordstrom. Being that last year's offerings were on the cutesy side, I hope this new collection turns out more fashion-forward.

For some time, Kate Spade has had a serious following for her handbags and shoes. From there, she's expanded into jewelry, luggage, sunglasses, accessories, beauty . . . and now apparel. Her clothing collection is only a few items for now - a Mexican-style loose top, a smocked tunic, a webbed belt, and a couple of loose summery dresses. But expect the collection, which is designed by Kate's niece Whitney Pozgay, to expand with time. Watch out, J. Crew!

Beyoncé Knowles carried a Kate Spade New York handbag as she ran errands around NYC this morning with the help of an assistant. He once again held her umbrella after also shielding her from the rain while she shopped yesterday. Beyoncé covered her belly in a leopard-print top during that outing, but today she showed off her shape in a tight minidress. While Beyoncé's baby bump has been the center of attention lately, the mom-to-be is also focused on her career. She's launching a maternity clothing line with House of Deréon, recently released the video for "Countdown," and is front and center on the November cover of Harper's Bazaar.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Kate Spade

Long live the '60s! In Kate Spade's world, we're all having breakfast at Tiffany's with Andy Warhol and we're never, ever too old or too cool for a good bow. At their showroom presentation, complete with their own New York City bagel cart, Kate Spade showed her knack for all things retro, girly, and colorful. Graphic prints made it onto handbags and dresses; oversized costume jewelry was designed to be layered, pumps got feather pompoms and crystal-encrusted heels, and wool hats were done in rainbows of color. The clothing stayed true to classic silhouettes, including full-skirted day dresses, A-line sheaths, and a cool faux leopard jacket. It's like an eternal good mood pervades Kate's technicolor world, and we like good moods.

Trends: '60s ladylike, color, graphic prints.
Colors: Candy pink, yellow, sky blue, taupe.
Key Looks: A pink knit shell dress worn with a little riding hat.
Accessories: The hats were a fresh highlight; the fun, statement-making shoes.
