It's that time - when all things cozy and comfortable have unmatched appeal. In an effort to keep even our knitwear as chic as possible (without compromising on comfort), we've scoured our favorite stores for the cold-weather essentials we'll need for the month ahead. Admittedly, some pieces aren't so basic - a little Fair Isle, a few stripes, or a bit of sheer here and there to add interest to Winter-perfect gray sweaters, chunky cardigans, and even skirts. As for the necessary elements, you'll find that we haven't skimped on comfy bottoms with stylish (yes, stylish) sweats and fleece-lined leggings. The leader in cozy boots is foraying into even cozier knitwear. UGG Australia's cashmere and wool collection mixes boyfriend silhouettes with creamy colors and charming details. I envision these for a collegiate chic look - perfect for a late-night study date in the library, if you catch my drift . . . Features include feminine baby cable accents and supple jersey lining. Full-grain shearling lines hoods to provide extra comfort and warmth. Mmmm, shearling. A brushed lamb wool poncho (in three colors) breaks up the cozy-fest as a transitional piece. Look out for UGG's awesome knits come August, but until then, here's a peek of my favorites.

Designer Spotlight: Qi New York

Knitwear can either be totally chic or totally outdated. Meet Qi New York, a contemporary knitwear brand that offers the former. It originally started in 2002 as a cashmere knitwear company, but has since evolved to include other luxurious yarns. The Spring collection is brimming with must haves: sheer cardigans, handknit hoodies, soft, draped tops, and unique dresses. My favorite piece is this tunic stripe dress (center); it takes stripes to a whole new dimension.

Fab Flash: Kirsten Dunst's Cashmere Collection

Kirsten Dunst is really throwing herself into the fashion ring recently: first appearing in the Spring Miu Miu ads and now collaborating with luxe knitwear line Lutz + Patmos.

She follows in the footsteps of Liv Tyler, Sofia Coppola, and Julianne Moore, who have all designed for the cashmere-friendly label in the past, and her capsule collection debuts on Feb. 3, during the upcoming New York Fashion Week!

J.Crew Fall 2012

J.Crew's packed Fall 2012 presentation showed a bevy of vibrant structured coats, eye-catching knitwear, and a refreshing mix of printed trousers. Almost every look has a sporty twist to it - we especially loved the casual pullovers made in silk floral prints, brushed fleece tops, and what has now become the brand's signature, daytime-appropriate sequins. Other standout pieces included a cozy two-toned tweed coat, leather trimmed jackets, and pajama-inspired pants. For accessories, VP of women's design Tom Mora provided major eye candy in the way of pastel candy-colored Manolo Blahnik pumps, Patricia Underwood hats, sleek snake-print bags, and textured clutches. Trends: Printed trousers, sporty, daytime sequins, tweed, snakeskin prints.
Colors: Emerald, brown, hot pink, orange, mustard yellow, blue, gray.

Altuzarra Fall 2012

Just when we thought we couldn't swoon any more over Joseph Altuzarra's creations, the designer sent us on a dizzying trip around the world via brightly hued Moroccan-chic knitwear, chunky fringe, plush shearling, and quirky coin embellishments. From 1940s Parisian silhouettes to ultra-tailored naval coats and equestrian-inspired jodhpurs, to the whimsical markings of a visit to a Marrakesh marketplace, this collection was all about mixing it up. The result? A sultry blend of super-structured jackets, pants, and fur-lined outerwear paired perfectly with eclectic fringe-laden skirts, Indian-braid schoolboy sweaters, and coin-infused cocktail dresses. Slick, tasseled, patent-leather ankle boots and knee-high riding boots completed each look - a fitting accessorized finish for the well-traveled style setter who knows where she's going next.

Trends: Global traveler, fringe, coin embellishments, equestrian-inspired silhouettes, fur-trimmed collars, quirky updates on the Fair Isle print.
Colors: Earthy brown, black, navy, ivory, gold, and bright pops of Moroccan oranges and reds.
Key Piece: The vibrant coin-sashed orange dress embodied Altuzarra's worldly take on his Fall '12 lineup.
Accessories: Chunky cummerbund belts, patent-leather ankle boots, and knee-high riding boots, complete with slick tasseled add-ons.

Macy's Teams Up With Doo-Ri For Next Designer Collaboration

Timing couldn't be more perfect for Macy's next designer collaborator: Doo-Ri Chung. The designer who's known for her beautiful draped dresses and separates - Chung's gorgeous purple dress was worn by Michelle Obama at the state dinner welcoming South Korea last week - will emulate the same aesthetic in her collection for Macy's Impulse line via short and maxi-length dresses, leggings, blouses, and trenchcoats using jersey, knitwear, and art prints. “Women definitely want clothes that are versatile. I love pieces that you wear for day, and when you accessorize, become perfect for evening, too,” said Chung.The collection is set to retail from $39 to $159 and will be available Feb. 15 online and in stores.
