Paperbag Pants

High-waist pants that have a gathered waistband, usually tied by a sash or belt made of the same fabric. The term originated because this new style of pant looks like the top of a paper bag. Skirts can also have the same paperbag-like detail. The moniker isn't appealing, but paperbag pants look great on tall girls who seek a comfortable androgynous look.

Double Take: Celebrity Clones, Part Deux

Being the celebrity clone-finder that I am, I have a fresh bunch of celebrity clones for you. First up, model Lisa Cant and actress Alexis Bledel. The similarity in their big, round baby blue eyes is undeniable, as is their rounded facial structure and fair skin. What's more, they're both delicate and doll-like. They can easily pass as sisters. If that were the case, Alexis would be the older one at 26, and Lisa would be the younger at 23. That's crazy because Alexis' baby face could have fooled me to think she's in her teens.

As the weather drops, more and more people head straight to one machine in their gym - the elliptical trainer. According to a 2008 report from the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association, the number of users of elliptical trainers in health clubs grew sevenfold from 1997 to 2007. And while you may be proud of yourself for making it to the gym and squeezing in some cardio, taking a lackadaisical approach to your elliptical workout and casually spinning your legs while reading a magazine or watching TV isn't going to blast away those holiday cookies. Here, 10 mistakes you frequently make on the elliptical and how to fix them so you maximize calorie burn while adding fun to your ho-hum routine.

Top Workout Ideas For When the Gym Is Too Crowded

1. You’re too lazy to enter your information.
Most machines are calibrated for a 150-pound person - but personalizing your stats will help you get a more accurate calorie read. Aim to burn around 100 calories per 10 minutes, says Jennifer Cassetty, an exercise physiologist.

2. Your resistance is zero.
You might feel like a million bucks spinning at a mile a minute, but without resistance, you’re not going to see results, says Röbynn Europe, a personal trainer at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Make sure that you’re using enough resistance to push and pull through the stride. Then continue at a moderate pace until you feel like you’ve done all you can do. "You shouldn’t feel like you have even five minutes left in you when you step off," she says.

3. You're a sloucher.
Standing up straight helps to lengthen your abs, giving you a chance to engage your core and even work your upper body muscles, Cassetty says. Certified personal trainer Neal I. Pire, MA, CSCS, president of Inspire Training Systems in New Jersey, recommends hopping on a machine with an upper body component so you can engage even more muscles - and blast more fat. Can't find a machine that lets you pump your arms? Let go: some research suggests that leaning on machine armrests during exercise reduces calorie burning.

4. Your machine sounds like it’s going to take off.
If you can hear the purr of the machine while you’re exercising, it means that you’re going too fast without enough resistance - which means you're not getting the most calorie burn out of your time, Cassetty says. Keeping a steady, moderate pace at a resistance that forces you to use your muscles will get, and keep, your heart rate up.

Ryan Gosling ran into a friend at an LA gas station yesterday. The pal was in for a treat, as Ryan hopped out of his own car and decided to wash the windows of his buddy's vehicle! Ryan wrapped up the soapy session and headed over to Jay Leno's The Tonight Show studios. Ryan sat down to talk about Drive and revealed that he's getting a little sick of himself with all the press he has to do to promote the many movies he has hitting theaters. Ryan said, "It's a bit overkill. It's a little much. I'm sick of myself. I can't imagine how everyone else feels!" He went on to talk about some strange advice he got about his late-night appearances. Ryan commented, "I ran into my friend Lisa Shields last night. She works for my agent now, and one of her jobs is to record all my late-night appearances. She told me this last night: she said I'm trying too hard on talk shows. She said you're trying too hard to be cool. . . . I said I'm going on Jay Leno tomorrow, what should I do? She said, 'I don't know, just don't talk. Sit there and don't talk.' And I was like, 'It's a talk show, how do you not?' And then she said, 'Do something weird like sit behind his desk and get him to sit in a chair."

Ice Cream Inspires Minx Manicures at Fashion Week

Ice cream and manicures might not seem like a natural pairing, but they were just that at yesterday's Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference in New York. Dozens of style bloggers (including yours truly) were treated to manicures inspired by the brown and black colors of Magnum ice cream. Nail guru Lisa Logan, who's decorated the digits of stars like Beyoncé and Eve, had nearly run through her supply of patterned Minx. Why was the crowd melting for the look, we wondered? "People like something different and fun for Fashion Week," she said of her fish-scale design customized with Magnum's colors. "And let's face it, people like ice cream, too." Can't argue with that.
