2010 Spring New York Fashion Week: Alexander Wang

Go Team Wang. For Spring, the designer shifted direction, lightened the mood, used less black, experimented with texture and layers, introduced funky sunglasses. All good choices, in my humble opinion. Always veering on the sporty, shoulder-accentuated heather gray sweatshirts evoked images of football players. Leather shorts and crop tops were fit for the boxing ring. Cool khakis and shredded red stripes emit a dangerous rugby vibe. There were still plenty of little black and white party dresses, but this time made of sheer inserts and cut outs - and more spacious, less spandex. Knits were a pleasant surprise; I wish there were more of them.

Everything seemed sliced and diced, reminiscent of Japanese designs, reminding me of Commes de Garcons. Check out the shoes: leopard mules, sexy black lace-ups, frisky oxfords. Wang cited, "Exploring the deviant side of American teen culture" as his inspiration. If that meant promiscuous teens making out under the bleachers at the homecoming game, I get it.

Which Drew Barrymore Grey Gardens Look Is Most Fab?

The much-anticipated Grey Gardens is premiering Saturday night on HBO - are you gonna watch?! Drew Barrymore channeled her stylish, inner "Little Edie" during her promotion circuit this week wearing an abundance of sensational ensembles. The adorable actress showed off her experimental side in a flattering striped dress by Narciso Rodriguez; old Hollywood glamour in an Alberta Ferretti nude gown; bohemian chic in a white, '60s-inspired frock by Andrew GN; and avant-garde appeal in a dramatic Giambattista Valli creation. I know my favorite Drew look, which is yours?

The Project Runway Season Five Finale Runway Show!

The grand finale of my Fashion Week was the Project Runway finale show. And what a show it was. Before the season five contestants showed their collections, it was a reunion among familiar faces. It's always a joy seeing Runway alumni gather and mingle. The recently booted Blayne and Terri were there - all smiles - and favorites like Jay, Rami, Jillian (wearing a familiar knit sweater from her collection), Chris March, and Jack Mackenroth (who I chatted with at the Jill Stuart show, he is so sweet) all made cameos. Enter Christian Siriano, who had his own Spring show the night before. Then, Michelle Tractenberg, Rachel Zoe, and Harvey Weinstein were chatting about. Quite the spectacle!Anticipation grew once Heidi, Nina, and Michael Kors all came out to welcoming applause. Side note: Are Heidi and Nina both wearing Roland Mouret dresses? They looked great, but I wonder if that was planned. At 9:30 a.m. the lights dimmed and Heidi appeared, microphone in hand. She said some heartfelt words to the people of Bravo and the Magic Elves (the show's producers) - saying goodbye and thanking them for five great seasons. To bring you up to speed, Runway is moving to Lifetime for their sixth season (and that will be interesting in itself).

The guest judge seat remained empty. All week long there had been rumblings about Jennifer Lopez being the guest judge, but it was anticlimactic when Heidi announced that Lopez was unable to due to "a foot injury." Boo. And so, Tim Gunn stepped in at the last minute to serve as guest judge. Don't get me wrong - I adore Gunn - but it was very exciting when Victoria Beckham graced us with her presence last time. Once all was said and done, the first collection, by Jerell, was unveiled . . .

Jerell
Jerell has one of the most lovable personalities, but his collection wasn't so. He came out and thanked his parents, boyfriend, and bestie, and I was really looking forward to his final collection. Bustiers, ruffles, dramatic bodices, and black and gold comprised his aesthetic. There was a regal undertone, as well as a pirate feel, but the taste level just wasn't that high. His two gowns didn't fit so well, and there wasn't a strong point of view. My favorite look was the embellished cardigan over a striped dress with sheer overlay.

Suede
Oh gosh. I really didn't like this collection. It was immature and incohesive, and the Barbie girl color palette was ridiculous. Suede claimed "Suede's going to rock it" but he didn't. He mixed plaid with pastels, ruffles with one shoulder, and shredded and draped pieces; cotton candy fabrics were utterly unsophisticated. I didn't mind the wedding dress, but that was subpar.

Joe
Joe is vanilla. His heart is in the right place, but his talent is hit or miss. Throughout the season, he's had some winners and losers, but his final works, which he claimed were Americana-inspired, were disappointing. He should have taken a more Ralph Lauren elegance take on the theme, and less Harley Davidson rough and tough. Brown leather corsets, patterned jeans, leather pants, and a navy dress with white stars were misses; a super cute paisley print dress, turquoise ornamentation, and a textured red ball gown skirt were hits. But this collection was not consistent enough to win.

Kenley
Fun, quirky and feminine - just like the girl who made it. I like Kenley, although her distinct laugh annoys some, and her Alice in Wonderland take on "her dream wardrobe" was surprisingly versatile. Each piece was unique, and yet the collection melded together wonderfully. There were a few ooh ahh pieces: the black dress with fuchsia print overskirt (pictured above), the dramatic ruffle teal print blouse and black flounce skirt, and the pink and black colorblock bodice with dramatic tulle skirt dress. Her little feathered hats, which she has a penchant for, were a nice touch. This was possibly my personal favorite - full of eclecticism - but things heated up after she showed . . .

Korto
I think Korto has the most interesting point of view, and her collection was beautifully exotic and elegant. However, there were one too many emerald green dresses, I'm just sayin.' Her collection was "inspired by nature and the landscape and clothes of her native country, Africa." She also designed the beaded and colorful jewelry (which I loved). Her color story was rich: emerald green, turquoise, mustard yellow, white, and ecru. Her silhouettes ranged from a slim halter gown and pouf sleeves to flirty cocktail dresses and asymmetrical cuts. The jungle printed banded belt frock was covetable, but a white frilly long dress was confusing. I loved the sometime Oscar de la Renta exoticism, though.

Leanne
Funny how the six collections gradually got better. I think Leanne is going to win. Her collection was as stellar as any of the professional collections from the week. It was conceptual, beautiful, and theatrical. Leanne claimed she "lost a million hours of sleep" over it, and it showed. Sculptural skirts, dresses, and gowns floated down the runway to the beat of a neutral, cool palette. The craftsmanship was expert and you could just feel the adoration in the air. I would wear the ivory off-shoulder top and turquoise petal skirt and the ivory and beige corset mini dress (pictured above) in a heartbeat. And her modern wedding dress blew Suede's off the (project) runway.

Celebrity Style: Kristen Bell

Cutie Kristen Bell has been making her rounds at New York Fashion Week. She attended the Alice + Olivia presentation in an ensemble that at first seems simple, but upon closer inspection, comes to life. She could have thrown on a dress, like most attendees did, but her look took a little more work. The color palette of black, white, and gold is tame, but the black tapered trousers are what make her so au courant. I love the way her cropped leather jacket toughens up her look, and how the gold coin belt softens it.

Fab Blab: Jason Wu Is Still on Pins and Needles

I caught him on the Today show this morning - hence the tardiness to work today - and Teen Vogue nabbed some time with the first lady designer extraordinaire, Jason Wu. We all agree Michelle looked fantastic in his white flower appliqué gown last night. Swoon.

In this Teen Vogue exclusive, Wu shared that he's "been on pins and needles for two months. I made the dress in November, and flew to Chicago with it over Thanksgiving. I was like, I'm delivering this myself! I didn't want anyone else touching it! But I really didn't know she'd be wearing it until I saw her on TV last night, just like everyone else. I dropped everything when she walked out. And, yes, I did cry a little bit. It's an incredible moment for me, but also for this country. We're starting with a clean slate." Didn't we all cry a little bit?

Fab Flash: Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick Are Feeling Sneaky

On screen, the steamy duo of Gossip Girl are dressed to the nines in designer duds but in their spare time, the two are busy promoting sneakers. Random. According to sources, Meester inked a deal with Reebok to be the face of their ad campaign while Westwick recently signed on with K-Swiss - love it or leave it?

Meester wears a pair of black high-top sneakers, black skirt, tank, and duffle bag in her sporty Reebok campaign. On the flip side, Westwick dressed his pearly white K-Swiss's with a dapper khaki suit and his signature pout. Being that we've never seen the two wearing sneakers on- or offscreen, I'm finding these endorsements a little off-target. What do you think?

Fab Blab: Rachel Roy Shops Random Towns

When I saw Rachel Roy's Spring '09 presentation last month, it was love. She crafts delectable, exotic clothes. It wasn't surprising, then, that she was very sweet when we met her at the opening of Chanel's Mobile Art Pavilion. She was modeling her clothes - not Chanel - head-to-toe, except for her stockings. Her toes must have been freezing, but her white banded shoes made a fresh statement. Her little black crystal bag added some baby bling. Overall, a very fun look. Here are a couple Rachel tidbits . . .

What is your favorite city to shop in?

"Ooh, good question! You know what? I like shopping in little, small random towns. Vintage. Because they aren’t picked over by designers like New York is. And that’s the truth. When I go and visit my grandmother and other relatives I like to do vintage there and I usually find amazing things."

Whose style do you admire?

"Lauren Davis. And other women that aren’t afraid to dress how they want as opposed to ending up on someone’s best dressed. I think usually they end up looking chic."

I Want This Wardrobe: Sex and the City Movie

In case you've been MIA, the whole Sugar gang finally saw the Sex and the City movie. But don't worry, I'm not going to utter a word about the story line. What I am going to open my trap about are the wardrobes of the fabulous foursome, courtesy of Patricia Field. Almost all of Carrie's outfits were dead on and gush worthy, but it was a little strange to see Miranda always dressed up and accessorized. I guess she's grown up and now appreciates fashion! Because I'm Fab, I was instantly able to identify what each character was wearing as soon as I saw it. Not! Let's just say I have friends in high places who were amazing enough to share their wealth of wardrobe knowledge. And what an excessive amount of wealth it is - dive in!
