Love It or Hate It? Jewelry Made Out of Fashion Magazines

I've thought of a few things to do with old magazine pages (use as wrapping paper, wall art, book covers, etc) but making jewelry has never been one of them. That's why jewelry designer Lenore Solmo is one unique chick. Her cuffs, bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces, made from fashion magazine pages, can be found at her store on Etsy from $32 to $86. What do you think? Do you love this concept or hate it?

Jewelry designer and reality star of The Real Housewives of New York City Kelly Killoren Bensimon has an idea about fashion - after all, she once served as accessories editor at Elle magazine. The former model is also the author of many books, one of them being The Bikini Book ($35). With Summer on the horizon, this 400-page tribute to the bikini is the perfect way to get inspired. Go back in time and see what bikinis Hollywood pinups of the '50s, Bond girls, and Brigitte Bardot wore to look sexy. Also get visuals of the monokini, tankini, bandini, and v-kini. I know, v-kini? Intrigued?

Fab Blab: Stephanie Seymour and Fenton Talk Jewels

Isn't it grand when two fashion folks get together and pick each others' brains? One of my Super favorites, Stephanie Seymour, interviewed the designer of jewelry line Fenton for Interview magazine. Seeing as how statement jewelry - especially cool, mixed material jewelry - has dazzled its way into our lives this year, I'm sure you won't mind hearing all about what the designer, Dana Lorenz, has to say. Here are the highlights from Stephanie's Interview interview, jinx:

If Dana weren't a jewelry designer she would . . . "My friends and I always laugh that maybe we'll leave it all behind and go open a Holistic Dog Spa or make organic soaps in Vermont, but to be successful at it. Like Diane Keaton in Baby Boom."
Favorite celebrities to dress. "Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton are always surprising and refreshing to see."

The designer's favorite materials to use. "Solid brass is great because of its weight and wear and value. I'm trying to plate a lot less because of the impact on the environment so we are working with heat and natural ways to tarnish and oxidize metal. I found a great source for vintage lucite and crystals from Germany who keeps an eye out for me. If I like what she's pulled I buy the whole lot - using up surplus materials that already exist in the world. It's the only way I feel good about achieving a look that's 'excess' without being excessive."
Her realization she was a successful jewelry designer. "Being asked to design necklaces for Proenza Schouler, getting a call from Anna Wintour's office about sending up items for xmas gifts . . . being interviewed by you for Interview!"

Glitterati: Robindira Unsworth

Sonoma County-based jewelry designer Robindira Unsworth practically grew up in the atelier of her clothing designer mom. She would sort buttons, play with fabrics, flip through fashion magazines, and dream of one day wearing runway fashions. Little did she know Bar Refaeli would one day wear her Gypsy Necklace ($413) on SI's steamy swimsuit cover.

It's apparent through Robindira's creations the bohemian lifestyle serves as her muse. In fact, her studio is Moroccan-inspired and one of her collections is deemed Marrakech. Prices start from $100 for her signature collection and $825 for her fine line.

This Just In: eLuxury.com to Close Up Shop

It's with utmost sadness that I report that one of our favorite online retailers, eLuxury.com, is planning on closing its retail operation over the next six months. While many shops are closing due to the recession, it is said that eLuxury's closure isn't due to its financial performance. Rather, it's because many of the brands it carries have their own online presence.

But it's not all tears over at the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton-owned company. “Starting in mid 2009, eLuxury’s new mission will be to create an ‘e-window’ into the world of luxury, by serving as an information reference for luxury in fashion, art de vivre, leather goods, wines and spirits, watches and jewelry, gastronomy, cars, yachts, and services,” said a spokeswoman. We will miss shopping from the high-end retailer, but look forward to what sounds like an exciting online magazine.

Even though my fashion world mostly lives online, I still revel in glossy pages of glorious clothes and beautiful women. That will never change. Magazines constantly strive to create fantastical images showcasing the latest trends and accessories. Some resonate, some flop. Vogue Paris consistently churns out provocative imagery - most recently their stab at anti-fur crusaders. Now, the mag is showcasing the super Cindy Crawford, shot by Inez & Vinoodh, in all her 42-year-old glory. Geez. In addition to the '80s bathing suits, bold jewelry, shocking colors, and sultry cutouts, Cindy proves she's still got it. Those of you reveling in the early '90s revival, feast.

Audrey Hu, designer of AH Jewelry, is no stranger to the fashion industry. In 2002, she launched what was once a favorite past-time (isn't that what they all say?) to a full-fledged business named AH Jewelry. Since then, her precious feathers and metals have been featured in numerous magazines and runway shows. It doesn't stop there; her signature peacock line has also been spotted on celebrities including Beyonce, Hillary Duff, and Naomi Campbell. Audrey's boho collection has left me totally smitten - I just might add it to my list of must haves!
